How do toll gates work in Spain, can you pay cash at all gates? Is it always a lane on the left? Are they usually "empty" like on the first video so that you nearly loose no time (let's say except toll gates in Madrid region)?

Good evening, in the summer I intend to use the N-230 from France via Tunnel de Vielha towards Lleida. What is the (current) condition, is it more or less smooth to travel? Would be kind to get some Information!!! Thank you

Until Aren you will drive 80 or so. Sometimes only 50, sometimes you can reach 100.

After Aren road gets better and will be easy to maintain 100 except in villages.

But I would recommend you to take the little road towards Tamarite de Litera and join A22. Someone recommended it to me and it was fine and I would repeat it.

Is Lleida your last destination or you are going to take A2 or so?

To my best knowledge they must but it is a long time I do not pay tolls in cash

There's no need to go to Bujaraloz, in Fraga you can take N-211 directly to Alcaniz. But it is a rather winding road for some km past Mequinenza.

It was also one of the most challenged road projects in Spanish history because initial environmental concerns ended up conjuring what then was the ghost of the region -terrorism.
I'd say it's too far West to be the Pyrenees. For me, that mountain range ends at N-121-A, West of there lie the Basque mountains. But it's hard to put a limit between them, and between the later and the Cantabrian range (I put this one at AP-68), it's a continuous range.

In Catalonia at least you can only pay cash at staffed gates. In most gates (where there's an automatic ticket machine) you can only pay with credit/debit card. There are also reserved gates for Via-T, an electronic system you can install in your car to pay without stopping.

Have you ever driven the alternative route via Tunnel de Bielsa and A 138 in Spain??

All tolled motorways accept cash, but not in every single gate. Some gates are reserved for Via-T (electronic toll collection). They have this sign overhead:

Not to be confused with this other sign, which means "Via-T payment is possible but not exclusive".

Usually, gates where you can pay in cash are indicated with the word "MANUAL", an "€" symbol or a pictogramme with coins. On the AP-68, in my region at least, most gates are now unmanned, so you have to pay like if it was a vending machine.

Toll gates in Madrid are among the emptiest in Spain, because nobody uses those motorways. That's why they are bankrupt.

However, toll gates in the rest of Spain can be crowded depending on the date - national holidays, summer holidays, etc. Especially the ones on the AP-7 in Barcelona and Valencia and the AP-8 in Irún.

Nope. Newer Catalan toll gates have automatic pockets that accept coins and bills:

All tolls in AP-7 have these newer machines. In other motorways, only "manual" (staffed) lanes accept cash.

Those are the ones we have on the AP-68 in La Rioja too. It must be that Abertis is replacing most staffed toll gates with those things in order to cut personnel costs.

Wow! I had not seen these new machines yet.

I'm a Via-T user, so unless I'm not driving my car, I never stop at toll gates.

Yes and no......

This is, being in the northern side of Spain I have crossed the tunnel but not approached to the motorway. Any question about the Spanish side I would be able to answer but nothing in the French side. I do not know that it is no longer, but nothing else

Teulada?, in Alicante, you mean?

To approach Lleida, this is the best option

but to approach Teruel, just google... and the best way will be to arrive Benabarre, turn to Barbastro, take A-22 and later A-23 till Sagunto where A-7 in the coast to anywhere.

Thank you! Yes Teulada between Valencia and Alicante. It's meanwhile my fourth journey, and everytime I would like to take another route. From LLeida to Teulada i have already chosen the trip. My only "Problem" is to discover a new route from France to Spain :-)

OK then, I get it...

If you are going to go to Lleida from France you can either choose Bielsa or Viella tunnels.
Providing you start in Toulouse, time and distance are similar in both cases.

P.S. I have been on holidays several times in those areas. Last time quite near to N-230 and I saw many French plates, but also near A-138.
I have been living between Alcañiz and Teruel so, if you want to know the best roads or just where to stop and visit, send me a PM and I will surf something interesting

A-66 Zamora - Benavente will open on 12 May.

http://www.laopiniondezamora.es/zamo...ra/841342.html

It may be opened all at once:

Sin embargo, recientemente el subdelegado del Gobierno, Jerónimo García Bermejo, apuntó hace unos días la posibilidad de que la autovía se abriera en su totalidad al tráfico, es decir, a lo largo de los 49 kilómetros de recorrido.

How transited is this border-following road, especially in Extremadura? Of course, heavy truck traffic and even a little heavy ADT at all during all the road makes for me a need for a motorway.
