Delayed to early November (6 weeks from now). Source:

Quote:
A63: Cornellana – Doriga 2.4km (2006 to Fall 2017?) – ? – map
December 2017 seems a realistic date, according to the information provided in this article:

Quote:
N-II: Terradelles – Vilafreser (AP7) 3.3km (June 2015 to October 2017) – ? – map
There was a landslide last June. An opening in 2018 is likely, but even that is not 100% sure.

Opening next week.

No news. But it's quite likely that both sections will open at once.

A driver has been caught at 240 km/h by a helicopter with a radar in the A-40.

It is the record in Spain.

I don't know if it was operating particularly at that moment on that road, but the DGT has Pegasus for sure, and they use it for traffic surveillance:

Wow, that seems like a very expensive way to enforce the speed limit.

As I have read, they have 12 helicopters

Here you are video shared on official web!!!!!!

http://revista.dgt.es/es/multimedia/...l#.Wc_jOmi0PIV

Sometimes via twitter they point other infractions, for instance, no belt, people with legs out of seats, dangerous drivers and so on... They say they can control one car every three minutes and you cannot know where they come....

On that way the speeders cannot say radar enforced speed limits are recaudatory

AFAIK, the DGT is self-financed (not sure if that word even exists in English). All its expenses are paid with its income (fines and fees, mainly).

Recently the DGT are testing drones and light aircraft, which are less expensive than helicopters, they claim.

But is it really necessary to enforce it by aircraft?

I've driven some 40% of autovías / autopistas in Spain, but you rarely see people going over 140 km/h. These people caught doing 200+ really seem to be the 0.01% exception.

It's much cheaper to have a guy in a van with a speed camera sitting on the side of the road, than using aircraft with high operational cost.

The DGT has been using helicopters for a long time. In the past, they just used them to monitor traffic around big cities at peak hours. Some years ago they came up with this Pegasus system which allows helicopters to detect many traffic violations (not just speeding). They also can detect if a car has a valid insurance and has passed the compulsory ITV inspection (equivalent to the British MOT), if the people inside a car are wearing seatbelts or child's car seats, etc. Such kind of traffic violations are much more profitable than speeding fines.

My point is this: what do helicopters accomplished that cameras on gantries don't, at a much lower cost per vehicle verified?

Cameras on gantries have a fixed location and can be seen by drivers. Helicopters can roam freely while passing unnoticed, which allows them to detect pretty much any infraction in a very wide area.

In fact, the DGT also has cameras that can detect people driving without seatbelts or using mobile phones:
http://www.larioja.com/logrono/20160...7004847-v.html

But then again, nothing a helicopter can't do much more economically than placing a camera next to every traffic sign.

I don't think these helicopters are flying 24/7. Plus they're incredibly expensive to operate and maintain and can't fly for long periods of time. I don't believe fines pay them off. They've been heavily publicized so I guess their only point is to scare drivers.

A radar is only for speed.
A helicopter is for absolutely all as you can see. They, indeed, post worst cases, and they aren't about speed.

About belts... cameras only check driver's belt on.
