Here this is supported by the media (and the media usually reports the number of deads in roads always after holidays), it's a cheap and effective awareness campaign.

The translation is "425 deads without security belt last year" but i'm used to read others like "x deads in the same weekend last year", "x deads last easter", "motorcyclist, be prudent", "driver, beware of motorist" and more..., in summer you can see them changin between Spanish and English.

Any updates on Spanish autovía's and autopista's? Normally they open like 200 - 500km per year.

The Eastern part of the Z-40 (Zaragoza) has been opened.

Apart from that, I don't know

BTW: Some pictures of the AG-53 (U/C). The viaduct in the background is the HSL Ourense-Santiago.

How is Spain doing during these strikes? Has the country come to a standstill already?

There are a slight shortage, but not serious (the police is escorting the fuel trucks and there is no problem with the food). The gov. is opening some toll motorways in rush hours (you can use them for free from 9am to 12am) to avoid the strikers (who are cutting motorways).

What? Are the toll motorways closed?? This is not good news since I'll be passing through there next week. I'll be going aaall the way down the mediterranean cost from La Junquera to Algeciras. Will there be a problem in making this journey?

No! I meant that from 9am to 12am they are free of charge (if problems are detected in near free motorways), at other hours they are working as (expensive as) usual...

How does that work? Say you get on the motorway by taking a ticket at 8 am and get off at 10 am, do you still need to pay? Or if you get on at 11 am and get off at 1 pm?

You must take a ticket as usual, when you get off, you have to give them the ticket but you don't pay anything .

If you take the ticket at 8am and you get off at 10am you don't pay, but if you take the ticket at 10am and get off at 13 you must pay. There is a toll motorway near my home and this is what they do from 1am to 5am (always it's free at this hours if isn't a holiday or weekend)

I think that today there aren't problems in free motorways so the toll motorways have been charging.

Not many unfortunately. After March elections, the pace of openings has suffered a typical slow down and we won't have too many new streched opened this year.

However, we are still on that annual average and the Ministry promised recently to open 1,500 km of new motorways (and 1,300 km of new HS-lines) until 2012. Construcion in A7, A8, A66 and A40 is still at good pace and we should see new streches soon.

This will be the new CM-41 or "Autovía de La Sagra", if you want to locate it on a map, this new motorway will pass near "Illescas, Toledo" (is the "middle point").

This happened on last Tuesday. A picket tries to stop a truck on the M-40 and the Guardia Civil "liberate" it.

OK, I know my English is not very good, but I'll try to explain:

In Spain, when there is a strike, the workers that support it make some groups called "informative pickets" (piquetes informativos) that stay on the streets and inform the workers about the strike, but sometimes these "informative pickets" try to block you so that you can't work. In Spain you have the right to go on strike, you have the right to work and you have the right to move around the country, but you DON'T have the right to block someone.

The Repsol truck was being blocked against his driver's will. The rest of the trucks are a picket, they're on a strike, they don't want the Repsol truck to be "free", but the Guardia Civil agents help the truck to escape from the block.

Clear I heard they removed most of the roadblocks by deploying 25,000 officers.

New urban area on the southeastside of Madrid. This is how they make their road infrastructure, ofcourse, they also have an extended metronetwork. Why can't we do that in the Netherlands? Such a road as pictured here would have only 1 lane per direction in the Netherlands.

Ofcourse with a nice density;

And a nice motorway for commuters.

I hate those giant roundabouts. They must have traffic lights and is easy to get lost there... but it seems that it'll be a busy street so it's necessary. ¿Where is that exactly?.

The M-30 is now underground, but this is still going under the "Vicente Calderon" (if you drive to the south, you'll be underground all the time, but if you drive to the north, you'll go out, pass under the "Vicente Calderón" and go underground again).
