I will not fly QR until 2012 cuz i didnt much like the existing DOH airport plus QR is a good airline, although some stuff like food and entertainment needs improvement. So when new DOH opens at 2011/2012, i shall fly QR again

Why's this airport taking forever to get built?

First two phases should be completed this year and the final phase is for 2015.

MOSQUE STRUCTURE

ON THE MID-RIGHT OF THE PICTURE BELOW THEY ARE BUILDING AN EXTENSION OF THE TERMINAL BUILDING WHICH IS SUPPOSED TO INCREASE THE SIZE OF THE DUTY FREE. IT WILL BE LIKE A BIG MALL BASICALLY. YOU CAN SEE THEM ERECTING THE STEEL, RED AS SHOWN BELOW.

CONCOURSE C BUILDING

THIS IS THE SAME EXTENTION I WAS TALKING ABOUT EARLIER

Qatar’s new US$14b airport to open 2011
Published: 2009/10/26

DOHA: Qatar is on track to open its new US$14 billion (US$1 = RM3.38) international airport in 2011 as the world’s largest gas exporter looks to diversify government revenues and stimulate employment, an official said yesterday.

Speaking at an aviation conference in Doha, Qatar, the chairman of the country’s civil aviation authority said the new airport would have capacity for 24 million passengers and cargo of 1.4 million tonnes a year.

Qatar is vying with Abu Dhabi and Dubai to become the Gulf’s transit hub with all three boosting airport capacity. — Reuters

Its actually the first two phases, plus a portion of phase 3.

There was an increase in scope, such as building part of a highway which was not part of NDIA, and expanding the terminal facilities.

This is the terminal view during opening day:

Some pics from the website. Some are old, and some are changed (altered) because of the expansion:

Does anyone in Doha or elsewhere in Qatar know when Qatar Airways will announce flights between Doha and Glasgow International?

New Updated pics.. You can see the red steel sections are the expansion that they have created called saddlebags, which will expand the duty free area considerably.

The Mosque is also visible by the circular concrete sections.

I really wonder whether the Middle East can support 2 major transit airports. Luckily, Qatar has been so far safe from the bad press that has plagued Emirates. I guess a low-profile high expansion strategy works as well!
