Qatar airport officials share details of HIA expansion plans

http://dohanews.co/qatar-airport-off...hia-expansion/

Quote:
A new drop-off area for premium passengers, wide concourses with more natural light and a connection to the Doha Metro are being considered as part of plans to double the size of Hamad International Airport’s (HIA) main terminal by 2020, a senior aviation official has said.

Additionally, a new 45,000sqm passenger amenity area – with features such as a museum, spa, children’s play area, garden, library, gym, outdoor dining and lounges – is being planned for the northern part of the terminal.

“It will provide a ‘wow’ factor … (and) a unique and enhanced passenger experience,” Peter Daley, the project director for the New Doha International Airport Steering Committee, said yesterday during the final day of the Qatar Transport Forum.
Quote:
This project includes adding:
  • 130,000sqm to the terminal building;
  • Eight additional contact gates;
  • 3,700sqm of retail, food and beverage areas;
  • 5,400sqm of lounge space; and
  • A 100-room hotel.

That is the problem...While Doha airport is cool, Doha is'nt and though Dubai airport is crowded, everyone wants to be in Dubai!! People want to ski in a mall, take selfies at Burj Khalifa, post pictures of the food they eat (people go to Abu Dhabi, Doha, Bahrain and eat the same food but they don't post pictures of that).... Since I was raised in Abu Dhabi, I know!!

Yes but MOST of the business never leaves the airports in Abu Dhabi, Doha and Dubai on the ground. It flies out again.

Doha airport will expand steadily to 50m pax per annum by the early 2020s before they need to consider a full new terminal build. The vast majority will never even see Doha.

Well aware that the airport need more space, management is overseeing a number of expansion projects to increase the airport’s capacity to 53 million travelers by 2020, ahead of an expected surge of passengers for the 2022 World Cup.

I understand that airports grow, need expansion, but that's crazy! The airport opened only 2 years ago and now they are going to expand it not by concourse-extension, but by changes of the existing terminal. That's burning money!

But members of the public took to Twitter to warn others of the incident. The Peninsula newspaper posted a video showing large pools of water on the floor of the airport and water flowing from the roof, with the description: “It's raining cats and dogs. Right inside Hamad Intl. Airport.”

One commentator tweeted: “Just wondering if you are providing rafts to carry passengers to docks? I mean gates .”

When we were passing through the Airport they were testing this futuristic looking internal APM. It looked really good, and impressive.

Google Street View captures Doha's Hamad International Airport

http://www.albawaba.com/business/goo...airport-849178

Quote:
Google recently launched 360-degree imagery of Doha’s Hamad International Airport, making it the first airport in the Middle East and North Africa available to view within Street View on Google Maps for everyone on mobile and desktop.

Street View is a feature of Google Maps that lets users explore places around the world like landmarks, natural wonders, as well as culturally and historically significant sites. Today, anyone with a smartphone can explore the airport’s 23-foot Lamp Bear sculpture and other attractions in the 600,000 sq m building, the company said.

Google used the Street View trolley, a push-cart outfitted with equipment to collect indoor imagery: a panoramic camera to collect 360-degree views, lasers to capture distances to walls, motion sensors to track the trolley’s position, and a laptop to operate the system.

Ulf Spitzer, head of Street View, said: “The Google Street View team continues to go to amazing places around the world because we know that our users love to see them and experience these locations online. From Urs Fischer’s Lamp Bear sculpture to the international brands that line Hamad International Airport’s duty free, travellers around the world now have the airport’s boarding gates, lounges, and much more at their fingertips.”

Hamad International Airport is the latest indoor Street View experience in the region and joins other structures such as Dubai’s Burj Khalifa and Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. It is also the latest in a long list of the region’s landmarks available for the world to explore online, including Petra in Jordan, the Pyramids of Giza, and the Liwa Desert in Abu Dhabi.

Google Maps’ Street View feature began in 2007 and today covers thousands of cities around the world. The program includes capturing 360-degree imagery of streets, theme parks, university campuses, pedestrian malls, landmarks and zoos.

Qatar’s Hamad airport gets its own theme song

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXsA7iquEmo

Qatar’s airport has a new theme song, and the country’s national carrier has just released a beautifully-shot video of it.

The anthem, called The Beginning, is the result of a collaboration between local singer-songwriter Dana Alfardan and the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra (QPO). The four-minute video starts with a solo pianist playing in the middle of the desert.

It then pans to the outside of Hamad International Airport (HIA), before moving inside to feature the QPO. Musicians are set up in front of the iconic Lamp Bear, playing on escalators and moving walkways. Some are even shown performing on the airport’s people mover, which is operational but has yet to open to travelers.
The video is set to be shown onboard Qatar Airways flights as part of its entertainment.

I flew into this airport end of December 2016 and January 2016 four times seeing Karachi, Dubai and getting to spend a day and a night in Doha. Out of the many airports I've visited, this is by far the best airport I've ever experienced.
