The study covers 13 Middle Eastern countries for the period to 2020 and is to be published in full at the Hotel Show 2008, the Middle East's leading supplies exhibition to the region’s hospitality sector, taking place at the Dubai International Exhibition Centre from 8-10 June 2008.

The Middle East Industry Outlook 2020 is an update of a groundbreaking research study by Fast Future and Global Futures and Foresight (GFF) on the Future of Travel and Tourism in the Middle East.

The study takes a futures perspective on the key trends and drivers shaping the region’s travel and tourism sector out to 2020 and beyond and is sponsored by the Hotel Show, Siraj Capital, Nakheel and Silverjet. Strategic partners on the study are the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) and IMEX Frankfurt.

Fast Future has conducted a detailed validation of development plans with major hotel groups, airlines, airports and travel and tourism boards across the region. The research identifies plans to invest at least $580 billion in over 900 hotels across the region from Syria to Oman. The study found projected construction costs for the most recent announcements from over 72 developers, investors and operators vary from $10,000 to $5.71 million per room.

“The report highlights the scale of investment opportunities on offer across the sector as well as validating the potential for sector-focused Investment Companies such as RAHALA. In order to make good investment decisions, reliable data on the industry’s future direction is critical – this is why we are backing this ground breaking study.” Said Ibrahim Mardam-Bey – Chief Executive Officer of Siraj Capital, sponsor and founding shareholder of RAHALA – a Saudi Arabia based SR 1 billion Hospitality Lodging Investment Company – and one of the founding sponsors of the study.

The largest components of the US$3.63 trillion investment were found to be US$1042 for leisure developments and US$1813 on tourism promotion and the supporting infrastructure.

The 19 largest airlines in the region were expected to spend at least $143 billion adding 876 planes to their fleets. The largest buyers in terms of aircraft purchased and total investment are expected to be Emirates – buying 245 aircraft at $60 billion - and Qatar Airways purchasing 150 planes for $52 billion.

The study also looked at 19 major airports and identified a total planned investment of $38.9 billion with the ten largest airports expecting to add capacity for at least 320 million passengers. The two largest spending airports were Dubai World Central (Al Maktoum International) at $8.2 billion and Saudi Arabia’s King Abdulaziz International at Jeddah, which is investing $8 billion.

Following these investments, Dubai World Central would be the region’s largest airport with capacity for 120 million passengers, followed by Qatar’s Doha International which is targeting a capacity of 93 million.

The research also looked at the fast growing cruise market and focused on twelve major cruise lines that between them operate 86 ships in the region. The largest of these operators currently are Royal Caribbean International and Holland America with 21 and 14 ships respectively. Eight of the Cruise Lines studied have plans for further investment – they expect to add at least 18 ships with a minimum investment of $7.84 billion.

“This report highlights how rapidly the travel and tourism market in the region is developing and emphasises the importance of the high end segment. These are critical reasons why we chose to enter the market with our business class only service. For the future, we think it is essential to develop objective insights on where the travel and tourism market might be heading and this is why we have put our full support behind this crucial study.” Said founding sponsor Lawrence Hunt, Chief Executive of Silverjet - the all business class airline that has recently launched a Dubai - London service.

The research programme will culminate with a major report to be published in June 2008 in time for the Hotel Show. The study began with a Pathfinder Report in May and was followed by a Hotel Outlook 2020 report published in June. The latest report published today marks the start of the next round of research.

The report also highlights six critical factors that could cause turbulence and confusion and have an adverse economic impact in the coming years: the global economic outlook, environmental challenges, human resources, safety and security, infrastructure and information availability and reliability. “We believe that an adverse outcome on any one or more of these factors could act to slow growth or even reduce demand,” said Rohit Talwar, the report’s author and CEO of Fast Future and GFF.

Have your herd anything recently about the proposed Glasgow to Doha flights with Qatar Airways? All rumours seem to have gone quite, although they do hold slots at Glasgow International...

Doha • The initial cost of the New Doha International Airport (NDIA) project has jumped from the earlier $5.5bn to $11bn.

The cost rise has been attributed to the soaring prices of basic construction materials and their non-availability as well as the increase involved in bringing in skilled manpower.

A source told The Peninsula: “The increase is mainly due to the crisis with raw materials. Countries like China and India are sucking up essentials like aluminium and steel. And cement availability still continues to be a problem here.”

The rising cost of living here has had an adverse effect as well. “Unskilled manpower is easy to get but the problem arises when it comes to bringing in trained professionals, for management and supervisory roles.”

In fact, Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker had made a fleeting mention of the project cost increase recently in Ahmedabad (India), where the airline had just launched its first flight to the city. Al Baker mentioned the $11bn figure but did not go into specifics, nor was he pressed on the matter.

The rise in costs should come as no surprise as several projects in the country have been hit by delays and cost overruns. Matters have not been helped by a tight credit market.

The NDIA, however, is set to open on schedule, replacing the present facility from 2009. The first two phases of the airport will open in 2009 with the final phase being brought on-stream in 2015.

In its opening phase, NDIA will comfortably handle 24 million passengers per year and on final completion, the figure will significantly rise to 50 million, 320,000 aircraft movements per annum and two million tonnes of cargo.

Moving walkways will be installed to handle the expected traffic and check-in and duty-free shopping areas 12 times will be larger than the space available at the current airport. NDIA will be environmentally-friendly and is to be equipped with carbon dioxide sensors and a tinted roof to save energy.

As the country works towards shoring up infrastructure, NDIA will be the crowning glory of all the work being carried out. And with Qatar Airways having Airbus A380 super-jumbo aircraft on order, the two runways at NDIA are being built to ensure the runways can accommodate the mammoth jets.

One runway will measure 4,850 metres and will be the second-longest in the world, while the second will be 4,250 metres-long.

New Doha International Airport's cost increases to USD9 billion
11/2/2008

Qatar announced, on February 10, 2008, that the cost of building the new Doha International Airport had increased from USD5 billion to USD9 billion, for the airport to begin operating in 2010 with annual capacity of 24 million passengers. The increase in cost is due to the integration of the three phases of construction into one, the global inflation and the higher prices.

Doha International Airport will display 40 adjacent gates and 12 external gates, and will handle cargo capacity of 750 thousand tons annually.

$9 billion mega Qatar airport to open in 2010

DOHA: A huge airport under construction in Qatar will cost $9 billion and open for traffic in 2010, the head of civil aviation authority said yesterday.

The cost has gone up from the budgeted $5bn to $9bn "and the airport will be ready in 2010," Abdul Aziz Al Nuaimi said on the sidelines of a conference on the expansion of Middle East airports hosted by the authority.

He said the higher cost was due to global inflation and the fact that the three phases of development of the airport have been merged into one.

Al Nuaimi said the airport will be able to handle 24 million passengers a year when it opens in 2010.

It will have a cargo terminal with a capacity of 750,000 tonnes a year.

US engineering giant Bechtel is building the airport, which is designed to eventually carry up to 60m passengers a year, part of Qatar's aggressive expansion plans built on the development of huge gas reserves.

Construction of the facility, covering a site of about 2,000 hectares, began in 2005.

Officials had previously said the airport would be built in three phases, with the first stage to be completed by this year.

Al Nuaimi also said in the past that the airport will have an annual capacity of up to 60m passengers in 2020.

Al Nuaimi said that Qatar's existing airport handled more than 10m passengers last year.

Taking into account the big expansion of the national carrier Qatar Airways and plans to turn Doha into a transit point between East and West, "we will definitely reach the 24m passengers mark in 2010," he said.

Doha: Qatar will have a world class aviation hub catering to 24 million passengers per year when a new airport opens in 2010, officials said.

Abdul Aziz Mohammad Al Nuami, chairman of Qatar's Civil Aviation Authority, presented the $9 billion project at the Airport Expansion Mideast Congress, a two-day event that concluded here yesterday.

Al Nuami, who is also the chairman of the New Doha International Airport's steering committee, said the airport is set to become a regional transfer hub competing with other major international airports of the Middle East and Asia regions.

"The core business of the airport would be the transfer of passengers... we will definitely reach the 24 million-passenger mark in 2010," he said.

Designed and built by construction giant Bechtel, the airport will be on the so-called midfield model, featuring two runaways with the supporting facilities in the middle.

It is based on the model of Hong Kong airport designed by renowned architect Norman Foster and is considered one of the most successful in terms of airplane distribution, circulation and remote parking, Qatari officials said.

The hub will have a runway of 4.2 kilometres and a second one with a 4.8 km length, one of the longest in the world designed to accommodate the A380.

Built over 22 square kilometres, half of which is reclaimed land, the airport will feature some 40 contact gates, 22 remote gates, 62 parking positions, a cargo facility with a capacity of 750,000 tonnes of cargo per year, a cargo aircraft maintenance centre, and maintenance centres capable of hosting aircraft the size of the A380.

The airport will also feature a 100-room hotel, a catering facility capable of providing 75,000 meals a day, ground service equipment facilities, an 80-metre high air traffic control tower, a village with administration facilities and mosque.

A separate Emiri terminal for the ruling family, VIPs and heads of state and an Emiri hangar are also under construction.

An additional expansion phase, planned between 2020 and 2025, envisages an ultimate airport capacity of 48 million passengers and 80 contact gates.
