We can see that the left or rather East runways is almost complete, while the West runway has still more time. Also, the Concorse C is well on its way, and the Main Terminal part (the central part connecting the three conocrses) looks complete (as far as the roof)! Still a long way to go; they should work faster.

btw, i'm a little confused about Qatar Airways at the moment. Are they a profitable airline? Some articles say yes, but others say they will break-even in 2010, or ever later.

Well, opening day capacity will be 500,000+ square meters and that is just the passenger building, which does not include other imporant buildings such as offices, control towers, maintenence, ect... It is still huge.

Yes we know! It was mentioned a 100 times here in the thread.

The design of NDIA utlizes the most effient passenger terminal there is in the world today, the HKIA style terminal. Space is wisely used; planes have lower times reaching the runways and taxiways, connecting times is lowered to 20 minutes, big.

Qatar’s New International Airport signs US$20 Million Security Contracts

Smiths Detection has won contracts totalling more than $20 million to provide automatic explosives detection equipment and checkpoint X-ray security solutions at Qatar’s New Doha International Airport (DIA), currently under construction.

The security system integration project is scheduled to be completed by late 2011.

More than a dozen Smiths Heimann HI-SCAN automatic explosives detection x-ray screening systems will be integrated into the state of-the-art baggage handling system to scan both check-in and transfer baggage at DIA.

In co-operation with local agent Qatar Security Systems, Smiths Detection also won a contract to supply and install over 150 X-ray inspection systems used at DIA checkpoints for cabin and oversize baggage screening.

Stephen Phipson, President of Smiths Detection, said, “We are delighted to have been selected to help protect this important new airport and anticipate that these contracts are only the start of Smiths Detection’s involvement as the New Doha International Airport expands in phases, eventually to handle around 40 million passengers a year.”

Smiths Detection’s hold baggage screening technology is already deployed in major international airports in Dubai, India, Scandinavia, Spain, and Germany.

Can someone from Qatar please enlighten me as to why they selected a site in the sea (as a result of which there was a massive reclamation project involved) when they have all that empty land in the country????
