Today, 2008/12/02

A tour around the project in pictures

1. Working in the old building on the garage side

2. And the garage is almost closed, just a few open parts left

3. And now in this corner also the first visible work is done after the foundation was finished. If it goes as fast as the other side there should be a couple of stories very soon

4. This between the last picture and tower 2, it's the lowest part of the new buildings so it's build in a different way.

5. steel beams ready to be placed

6. tower 2

7. A concrete pump stood ready to pour a wall in tower 2

8.

9. The concrete was delivered when I was taking pictures

10. This pillars that are almost finished are part of tower 2

11. In the little ally between the new and the old Babylon the facade has gone up

12. Only on this side above the hotel the facade is completed

13. Tower 1 site. the sheet piles that will surround the tower are almost finished. It took a while probably because of the problems they had with sinking foundations of the older buildings.

14. And again the garage, now at the side of the Central Station

15. close up

Yes, the New Babylon is build completely around and partly over the old Babylon. And until now all sides weren't build at the same time, the part over the hotel was build first and has topped out already. But from now on it will be full construction at the same time on the other 3 sides of the building. When it's finished it will be one complex, but old and new.

All in all it's quite an extraordinary build around the old complex even if the towers aren't to high on a World level, but they are very tall for the Netherlands.

What was Babylon? The name of the central train station???

Also, why did they keep the old building? It isn't heritage architecture, and it looks like it would have been far easier for them to demolish it and start from scratch.

I have to say though-- I am fascinated by how the old structure is being incorporated. Very intricate and intriguing!

It was a mixed use building: shopping mall with offices on top next to the central station. Don't know why they kept the old building. Maybe the structural quality is good which makes it durable and expensive to build in the first place.

De volgende zijn van wat mindere kwaliteit, omdat ze van achter glas genomen zijn. De locatie maakt het echter wel goed: vanaf de 41ste verdieping van Het Strijkijzer:
[nexxt photo's are of worse quality, because they are taken from behind glass panels. The location should do the trick here: taken from the 42nd floor of 'Het Strijkijzer' residential tower.]

you'll have a better view on the project when it rises above the old Babylon.

Are they still working here? most projects are already on holiday.
