BEJAIA - BENI MANSOUR | Doubling and Modernization | 86 km | Under Construction

The doubling of the railway El Guerrah (Constantine) and Tadjenanet (Mila), delivered in late 2013

Thales will lead the rail signalling project of Rocade Nord in Algeria

The North Rail By-Pass crosses the country from East to West, providing service to the main cities along this route such as Oran, Algiers, Constantine and Chief. The project includes the renovation of signalling systems in three segments in northern Algeria: Annaba-Randane Djamel, Bordj Bou Arreridj-El Gourzi and El Khémis-Ouded Sly. These investments form part of an extensive development program for the Algerian rail network.

The contract has been awarded to a consortium led by Thales, which includes Vossloh-Cogifer and CSEE Alger. It includes the design, supply, installation and start-up of the signalling and telecommunications equipment for the three forementioned segments, representing in total 440 km of double electrified track, thereby providing the line with the latest technology in safety installations and communications. For this purpose, it will have the ERTMS system as a train control and command system, state of the art electronic locks and a modern communications network. All of this will allow improving safety and increasing the line capacity with speeds of up to 220km/h.

The solution by Thales encompasses the train command and control system ETCS Level 1 and Level 2, electronic signalling for all 29 stations, four control centres, telecommunications and safety systems. Within the consortium, Thales Rail Signalling Solutions España is responsible for integration of the train command and control system ETCS Level 1 and Level 2 and for supplying the Traffic Control Centres, CTC, and hot box detectors.

This contract strengthens Thales's position in Algeria as a key ally in the modernisation of the country's transportation system, following the previous contracts for modernising the Torta-M'sila and Tizi Ouzou-Oued Aissi lines and the integrated ticketing system of the Algiers's underground, confirming its leadership position in the transportation market.

For Thales Rail Signalling Solutions España, this project confirms the international capacity developed from Spain and shown by contracts in Turkey and Mexico.

Signalling and Train Command and Control Systems

To ensure rail traffic, the Project presents a solution based on the LockTrack 6171/PIPC interlocking, with provides information in a safe manner to the train protection system and traffic control systems.
LockTrack 6171/PIPC is a last-generation electronic lock developed by Thales Rail Signalling Solutions for supervising and controlling rail installations. It provides a high availability and top safety level by using redundant architectures at all levels, both in the various modules that make up the locking system and in the interfaces with other equipment and systems.

The train protection systems that will be installed in the line are systems ERTMS AlTrac 6481 RBC (level 2) and AlTrac 6413 (level 1), complying with all interoperability and safety requirements of European Directives.
The train command and monitoring system ETCS Level 1, which makes use of the functionality of the interlockings, significantly improves the operational characteristics of the existing infrastructure. Its flexible architecture allows a direct coupling of the ETCS system to the infrastructures of different manufacturers and technologies (relay and/or electronic interlockings).

The product offer of Altrac 6413 ETCS Level 1 solution of Thales consists of a thorough package of solutions that can be applied in a flexible manner to the customer's needs. The architecture allows solutions adapted to both the operational needs and the budget limitations of the customer, to enable migration scenarios towards a train command solution that is safe, interoperable and modern.

The ETCS Level 2 system is superimposed on the existing interlocking infrastructure, where the RBC is related to electronic interlockings via network or, if applicable, with relay electrical interlockings and to Centralised Traffic Control (CTC) equipment via specific networks. The RBC configuration is a 2 out of 3 computer system, based on the Operating System of the Thales TAS platform for safety applications, widely tested in interlockings, axle counters and system AlTrac 6452 LZB by Thales.
The Traffic Control Centres included in the project allow improving rail traffic management, automating it to increase the capacity of the rail network, train frequency, reducing risk and delays and rationalising rail operation.

The entire system is designed for a high availability with the highest safety level.

Such length "is the largest on the African level," said Mr. Tu, noting that Algeria currently has the best railway network on the continent. Among the projects within this framework, the Minister cited the doubling of the railway line extending north of the Moroccan border to the Tunisian border.

Maghnia: introduction of a railway line to Oran

Sellal inspects the modernization and electrification of the railway Thénia Tizi-Ouzou

The Hamma train station has been conceived as a visual axis between the bay and several national monuments. One arrives to the station at an urban entryway, and passes through a landscaped area before entering into a great hall. The commuter train station lies at the lower street level, which permits views to the sea. This connects the urban fabric to the coast and creates a new park-like environment.

The structure harmonizes with the monumentality of its surroundings. Large beams support the entire the upper floor and give the impression that the building is levitated over a giant perforated surface. Its support points are screened on the platforms, and converted into circulation hubs. Thus visible structural elements have been eliminated, and the entire complex has a feeling of extreme lightness.
