The border between Algeria and Tunisia is open. You can cross the border between the two countries by train.

Dessau wins contract for Algerian project

Laval-based engineering firm Dessau Inc. said yesterday it won a $38.8-million contract for preliminary and final design of a 170-kilometre double-track electric rail line in northeastern Algeria. The contract is part of a $2.3-billion rail investment program by an Algerian state planning agency. It was awarded by a consortium of China Civil Engineering Construction Corp. and Turkey's Ozgun Construction that is handling overall implementation of the program. The line will connect the cities of Bordj Bou Arreridj and Thenia and will carry passenger and freight trains capable of speeds of up to 160 kilometres an hour. The design work will be done by about 50 Canadian and Algerian engineers at Dessau's office in Algiers. They will design bridges, viaducts, tunnels, underpasses and overpasses, and drainage and signalling systems for the tracks. Dessau has designed and managed several construction project in Algeria in the past decade.
