If anyone has been to Vancouver, what's their skytrain system based on??? Subway/LRT? I know it's not monorail. Their Skytrain runs under, at and above ground level.

Vancouverr Skytrain rides rides on two rails and steel wheels like a conventional rail vehicle. Unlike a conventional rail vehicle, it is powered by a linear induction motor. Magnetic coils on the rail bogies interact with conductive reaction plates in the railbed to drive the trains forward.

The Vancouver Skytrain trains were built by Bombardier. Similar systems are used for the Detroit People Mover, Toronto Scarborough RT, Kuala Lumpur Putra, and New York JFK Airtrain. For more inforamtion, see the following links:

Well, in my opinion if you built a monorail instead of building a subway you spend less money...so its more economical! Also the construction time is smaller and... your city becomes more modern!!! I like monorails very much and its a pity we don't have any here in Greece...

And I forgot to say that monorail isn't interrupted by roads and other means of transport....!!!

Monorails can get same dapacity than LRT, beside monorails are cooler because one can amuse with landscape. another very importanta finantial advantage: monorail´s infrastructure get additional value echa day; it does not happen with another massive transportation way

Dubai Metro is a LRT system and runs both underground and on elevated tracks. Monorails are being build on resort-like separated aereas, like The Palm.

I prefer Monorails for within a city. Especially if its the suspended type. Better views of the city.

After seeing the Tokyo monorail in action, I have no doubt that monorails are a superior form of public transportation. No way could a LRT achieve these speeds in a dense area like Tokyo, unless they tunnel it.

Plus the view ain't too shabby either

Monorails might be too expensive for light transit purposes.
