Skopje - Northern Bypass | Скопје - северна обиколница

This is going to be a 2x[2+1] freeway (no toll). It connects E-75 & E-65 and is a part of Pan-European Corridor VIII. From the Macedonian roads M-3 and M-4 overlap here. The bypass is mostly supposed to handle transit traffic in East<=>West direction. Skopje already has an "Eastern bypass" (Miladinovci-Petrovec) which handles most of the North<=>South transit traffic since the early 80's. The northern bypass will also play a role in handling traffic from/to Kosovo. Considering the route, the intra-city traffic will not be aided much unfortunately.
I hate to admit that I still don't have exact information about some important facts. This is due to several changes in the project and a lack of transparency that really pisses me off. Anyway these are 99,9% accurate

Length: ~25,5km

Profile: 2x10,75m, median of 4,00m and shoulders 2x1,00m

Interchanges: 9 certain (from what I saw);
up to 11 (from what I red, but I can't confirm it)
Those 9 certain are:
1 Cloverstack
1 Semi-directional T
1 Cloverleaf
1 Trumpet
3 Diamonds
2 Parclos

Ordinary overpasses and underpasses: ~30

Viaducts: 3 (Orman L=627m; Kondovo L=435m; Volkovo L=368m)

Bridging structures total legth: ~2100m

Acoustic barriers: ~5km

Construction deadline: June 2008

Cost: ~120.000.000€

The bypass is devided in two sections with almost the same length.

The eastern section is Hipodrom-Orizari. This is the more important section and We were supposed to already have it on-line by now, but it was drastically postponed due to land property issues. The eastern section mostly passes through plains and some very gentle hills. The project is by Mavrovoproekt and Balkan Consulting. The main contractor is GD Granit AD Skopje and ADG Mavrovo is an "accomplice".

The western section is Orizari-Saraj. A good chunk of this passes through some rough terrain (you will see some impressive scenery on the pics). The project is by Balkan Consulting Skopje and the main contractor is Terna, Athens and Beton AD Skopje is an "accomplice".

Here are some older pics (early December 2006), taken at 5 construction sites.

And before I forget: special thanks to Steva, who thought me a couple of tricks in photoshop

There are 97 pics, so please be patient

Maps (homemade by me )

1
The original and the final alignment of the bypass

2
The whole bypass area. Detailed maps of marked areas are available below (pics 4;5;6;7;8).

3
Legend for the detailed maps

4
Detailed map of area#1 on the big map(pic 2)

This is the "Hipodrom" interchange, the eastern terminal point of the bypass. It's a huge cloverstack (1/2 stack), and I consider it to be the crown jewel of the bypass. To the south and to the east you go towards E-75. To the west you enter Skopje on an urban freeway that runs until near the center atm (it's incomplete). To the north is the bypass and you go towards E-65 which is some 17km away (the junction is Skopje North at Stenkovec). You can see at the bottom the rail line Skopje - Kumanovo and the local Skopje - Ilinden road going through an underpass.

Detailed map of area#2 on the big map(pic 2)

This is a section which was delayed because of the mentioned land property issues. The map is very accurate although I might have missed an overpass/underpass or two. Also there was some information in the media about one additional interchange on this section, but I couldnt see any proof that it is actually going to be built now, as a part of the bypass project.

6
Detailed map of area#3 on the big map(pic 2)

This section is practically finished. It only lacks horizontal and vertical signalization. I might have missed an overpass/underpass or two, otherwise the map is very accurate.

7
Detailed map of area#4 on the big map(pic 2)

This section is under heavy construction right now. The map is accurate although I might have missed an overpass/underpass or two. I'm also not 100% sure about the geometry of the cloverleaf interchange (it has been redesigned at least once) and about the details of the bridges over river Lepenec, where the trumpet interchange is.

8
Detailed map of area#5 on the big map(pic 2)

This is the "Kondovo" interchange, the western terminal point of the bypass. It's a huge semi-directional T combined with a bridge over river Vardar to the south and with a viaduct to the north. To the east you enter Skopje via Gorce Petrov blvd. To the North is the northern bypass (E-65 until the Stenkovec junction). To the south is also E-65(southbound). The Skopje - Tetovo railroad crosses here and also 3 minor roads including the R-403 towards Radusa and Jegunovce.

Of course it will

But like I said its mostly designed to take care of transit and to distribute traffic going in and out of Skopje, not so much to alleviate the intra-city traffic.

Since this bypass will serve east/west traffic, it will make it really easy for Sofia people to go to Tirana and Ohrid.

Great job, Realek.

Great job, Realek.
well, it will not drastically change Ur jorney since the section is only 25+km. But it will definately be less stressfull cause U will completely avoid Skopje and some of its unpleasant suburbs through which the current link to Ohrid/Tirana passes.
