Given our experience with the Simon tower redesign and White Lodging's "penchant for functionality", this is exactly what I thought we'd see too. However, I've recently changed my tune based on these three reasons:

1. According to that IBJ article, Ratio only had a week to rework the original Simon design (I had no idea they were working on such a tight schedule). Though certainly an improvement, the rather mundane redesign was not necessarily the result of lack of interest or pressure by the city but a side-effect of an overly agressive timeline set by Simon. That isn't really the case this time. Plus,

2. the city's stake is considerably higher this time. Hence the hiring of Hess to oversee the redesign. Might not be blockbuster architect hire that they're making it out to be, but they clearly have more of an interest in getting a better design. Why spend more money if they don't care about the design? If the final design isn't much of an improvement, won't people ask why they wasted money hiring an architect?

3. Indications that the White Lodging rendering was "very preliminary." Whether you believe that spin or not, the fact is that they are clearly trying to give the impression that what we have seen is not what the product will be.

I know I'm out on a limb on this forum, but I remain optimistic.

FYI:

The redesign on the Simon Tower also was hindered by the fact that Simon had already order all of the steel for the Tower. That really limited what Ratio could do with that project.

I don't know why the City isn't asking to buy the HI design for the Marriott? The Airport Authority is doing that with the new Westin at the Airport. It was superior to the winning proposal so they have bought that design. Why couldn't White Lodging and the City do this?

Yeah, the design was decent but not anything spectacular. Besides the height, the location was the best thing about the HI.

This project is really starting to piss me off too. Even though the rendering is going to suck and we will all be disappointed, AGAIN, I still just want to see how shitty of a 30 story tower we get this time lol.

Thats sad, even though its going to be shitty, I still can not wait to see it.

I wish I could just go to the firm in merriville and ask them to see the rendering. oh well...

Wasn't this thing supposed to be on a tight deadline for the 2010 Super Bowl?

Yes, tight <COUGH> deadline for 2010, but it's for the already scheduled Final Four that year. Indy's hoping to land the 2011 Super Bowl. That will be decided May 22nd.

NOW Is The Moment Of Truth!

Designs To Be Re-Submitted Today!

City leaders and development officials today will share updated design plans for the city’s proposed 1,000-room hotel, the $250 million JW Marriott scheduled to open in Downtown Indianapolis in 2010.

About the project

What:JW Marriott Hotel.
Where:At West and Washington streets Downtown.
Developers: White Lodging Services of Merrillville and REI Real Estate Services of Carmel.
Cost:$250 million.
Amenities:800 to 1,000 rooms, connected by skywalks to the Indiana Convention Center, and possibly a family-oriented water park.
Opening: 2010.
What's next:Today: a 2 p.m. media event to release more hotel details. Wednesday: The city will ask to sell up to $66 million in bonds to support the project.

Sources: Star archives, Indianapolis Convention & Visitors Association

The plans will be unveiled at 2 p.m. at the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown.
Local tourism officials, members of the city’s hotel selection committee and developers from REI Real Estate Services will be on hand.

The hotel is being developed by White Lodging Services Corp. of Merrillville.

A letter of intent between the city and hotel developers, reached in January, says the developers will agree to break ground on the project by Jan. 31, 2008. It is supposed to open by January 2010, in time for the Final Four, which will be held in Indianapolis in March 2010.

The city is kicking in $48.5 million in subsidies that will come from selling city-based bonds and a possible property-tax break.

The bonds would be paid off over a period of up to 30 years by property-tax revenue from a tax increment financing district the city will create around the hotel.

The city also agreed to kick in public money to pay for an enclosed walkway to the Convention Center and a huge ballroom that the Convention Center couldn't include in its latest expansion plan.

YAY!!!

I fully expect a greatly improved design, but I'm not holding my breath on the 1000 rooms or the hope of 30+ floors. Hopefully I'm wrong.

watch it be a redesign like simon headquarters. =/
I will much rather put my money on the kosene design as to when it comes to neat new architecture. I can predict it now! A little less concrete, a few steel beems over here, some green glass, and some local artwork! Amazing!
=O
