dude, I don't even know what a bullock cart is.

But I have seen pictures of Bombay's overcrowded commuter rail system, and it's all old brown-yellow trains.

I know India is capable of so much more - Delhi has a modern fast-growing metro; for some reason Bombay gets left behind.

So? Mumbai is building a metro at the moment. You might want to keep up with current events.

Even though they're "old brown-yellow trains" they work darned well considering. Don't throw stones in a glass house.

Not at this moment. They're scheduled to start next month, but even that might not be for sure.

Metro work all set to start chugging

Chittaranjan Tembhekar

Construction work on Mumbai’s first metro rail project may soon start, now that the Urban Land Ceiling Act has been repealed.

The 12.5-km inaugural phase between Versova, Andheri and Ghatkopar is expected to get the 35-acre plot in Versova that was stuck in the ULC row under litigation, following the repeal. The land is crucial to begin the project.

A source in MMRDA told DNA that repealing the principal Act of 1976 would not affect the land’s status. The government or government bodies have taken possession of the land under sub-section (3) of section 10.

As the land is likely to be available for the project, construction work can begin on a 9km stretch. “It was not that difficult to acquire the remaining land at Sarvoday Nagar, Ghatkopar, and Andheri,” said the source.

He said the plot in Versova was free from the ULC row and the litigation as the government had not taken its possession under ULC. “The government or MMRDA can acquire the land by paying compensation to the owner. The compensation can be in terms of money or transferable development rights.”

Desperate negotiations were on to end the stalemate over the acquisition of the plot in Versova for setting up a rail-car depot and casting yard for construction work.

The total cost was estimated to be Rs2,356 crore. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority had even attempted an out-of-court settlement with the owner.

A special purpose vehicle, Mumbai Metro One Private Limited, led by Anil Ambani’s Reliance Energy is in charge of executing the project. P Maheshwari, director of MMOPL, said the land was supposed to be acquired by MMRDA before it was handed over for the project.

MMRDA will start construction work in January 2008, almost six months after the schedule date. Six leading multinationals in rail transport - Siemens (Germany), Bombardier (Canada), Alstom (France), Rotem-Hyundai (South Korea), Chunyun (China) and Nippon Sharyo (Japan) - have queued up to extend rolling stock (shuttles and other rail equipment) to MMOPL.

The project will be developed on a BOOT (build, operate, own and transfer) basis. The state and central governments will give viability gap fund of Rs675 crore for the project on a 50-50 sharing basis.

@Woonsocket54
- geo-technical surveys, soil testing, pre-cast segment moving plan, land required for depot, traffic management etc have all been taken care of. Only the ground work on building the elevated viaduct is left. Work should definitely start this January. The consortium building it has been given a time of 5 years max to complete the work and start operations. However, the MD of the project has from time to time said that they will ensure that construction work gets finished in 3 years max.

Here's a pic of the site where Geo-technical investigations were being carried out:

@MaitreyaSequeira - That pic with the white bus(1st pic) is from the town of Udaipur in Rajasthan.

@kix111 - That picture of people clinging to the back of the bus is from Delhi. That was scene when all the 'blueline' buses [private owned] were taken off the streets because they violated basic traffic rules and often accidentally ran over people. The buses were banned for 3 days so people had to cling on to the government DTC buses as that was the cheapest option.

And about the buses that run in Mumbai...HKSkyline posted pics of buses that currently run in Mumbai by BEST (it's a govt organization). The new bus with the circular headlight is a TATA globus run by the same org. Recently BEST inducted new King Long and Volvo buses to its fleet.

Here's a small article about the volvo buses-

and here's one of the King Long buses-

Around 20 of these KL buses are plying on the streets of Mumbai. They run on CNG, have a 21inch TV, DVD player etc.

This one is from "Rajastan", written "Udaipur Bus" at the side.
So it may be the City Bus of Udaipur City in Rajastan and you took this from their website too.

The other pictures are also not from MUMBAI, may not even India
