LONDON | Stock Exchange Reclad | 100m | 27 fl | Com

One of London's ugliest towers - the Stock Exchange building - is getting a shiny new reclad. As part of the redevelopment it will get some additional floorspace too. This was how it looked before:

And these are some recent pics...

Thanks to various people in the UK forum for these pics.

HUGE improvement.
This should be done to more towers, not only in London.

Much nicer! Shame they couldn't add a couple of floors to it whilst they are at it!

I could think of at least a dozen more towers in London where they should do the same

Guy's Tower, Euston Tower, Portland House, Millbank Tower, Shakespeare Tower, Lauderdale Tower, Cromwell Tower, Trellick Tower...well basically all London highrises built between 1960 and 1980.

Trellick Tower and the Barbican towers are Grade-1 listed, so they'll never be touched.

Guy's = Agreed unreservedly, although even a reclad might not save it
Euston = It does look a bit dated, but its a very good example of 'International Style'
Portland = Agreed... Looks cack, but has great potential
Millbank = Ditto Euston
Barbican Resis = They need something, but I don't think a glassy reclad would work
Trellick = Totally disagree. Trellick's power and beauty is in its stark raw concrete facade

It turned from a sore thumb into a landmark.

A whopping 3-5 metres taller. They're adding fins on the edges of the roof

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like a lot of the new skyscrapers being built/proposed/reclad in London are varying shade of light blue.. the london bridge tower, the gherkin, stock exchange, the new foster one.. Any reason why (or am i just being crazy)?

^thats just the renderings representation of what steel and glass looks like according to the easy-on-the-eye palette. And not the grey of reality. True there was a fad for aqua coloured glass but thats pretty tacky nowadays.

I reckon they should definitely paint the Barbican towers white or cream, at the mo they look piss poor with that shitty mouldy-concrete colour.

Yes I agree... they look so forbidding as bare concrete, which doesn't work as they're actually quite graceful towers. Trellick looks good as bare concrete as the entire building just screams '**** off!' at you as you drive along the A40 or leave London Paddington by train, but the Barbican towers have much more impact on the London skyline and could do with being made easier on the eye.
