Henninger Turm Redevelopment |140m | U/C

Buildt in 1960, opened in 1961 (http://www.aufbau-ffm.de/serie/Teil23-25/25-9.html), it was supposed to hold all the ingrendients needed for Brewing Beer. Mainly they buildt a tower (120m) due to the lack of space at the site.
On top the was a public viewing platform as well as a rotating restaurant.

When the Brewery stopped production the site was demolished except the Henninger Turm, but which was closed anyway as well in 2003.

Now there has been an architectural competition to redevelope the tower because it's too costly and uneconomic to save the tower.

The chosen design resembles a lot the old Tower and gives back the Frankfurters a little bit of this famous Landmark.

The facts:

Meixner Schlüter Wendt Architekten, Frankfurt
start of construction: 2013
130m tall
Apartement Tower (130 apartements)
Green facade with plants ranking on them (south, east and west side)
New big Beer can on top, consisting of a new "Beer Can" (rotating restaurant, viewing platform and the only rotating luxury apartement in Frankfurt on top.
Completion in 2015
Start of demolition of the old Henninger Turm starting in autumn 2012.

These large, rectangular windows seem to be a nice trend in Frankfurt!

Great compilation, thanks man!

I'm rather disappointed with some of the grey facades at MainTor though. It all looked so much more intriguing and light in the renders, they should have gone for a different sandstone color there.

Calling these things on the riverfront "Palazzo" is the most innappropriate naming ever. It doesnt get more provincial an uncultivated architecture wise. Anything but this would be far better. Just because of a sandstone cladding with pseudoroof doesnt make a building a high class not even a Palazzo. They are total unurban crap and they stay crap. So please for gods sake and all generations to come, stop it nowand build someting like Klostergärten in Berlin, which would fit far better with its historic neighbour and with what had been there before.

Has there been any attempt to name this type of architecture? The kind that has flat brick surfaces and features large, often rectangular columns? I have watched it develop in the Baltic/North Sea area of the world over the past few years and am curious why it hasn't been named yet. It is so distinct that I feel it deserves a name already. How about 'flatist'? Or 'flachist' for you German-speaking folks?

^ There's a word already - cubism/modernism. Though this was applied to different kinds of buildings, the words origin pretty much does it here.

There's a historical mansion right next to it. People will compare both and judge.

I don't consider it Modernism. I hate Modernism. This is distinct and different. It's contemporary, but not Modern. And it's definitely not cubism. Maybe, from a European perspective, the distinction is not so obvious. But, to me, this style is very new, unique, and, most of all, soulful. Modernism is desolate. It lacks soulfulness and feeling. This doesn't.

^ That park is sort of ok, but all that greenspace infill is a pure waste in that location. It'll make this quarter feel very unurban, sterile and dead.

I like the small cafe and the gate highrises though.
