New residential tower in Westend

Plans for a redevelopment of the former Oberpostdirektion emerged a while ago, now more details are available, writes the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

The developer Deutsche Office plans a revamp of the listed historic building and the demolition of an adjacent 22 years old office building to make way for a small residential highrise building. 400 units are planned. The development has been approved. The design of the tower is not final yet.

EDIT: More infos with renderings (although the design is not final)

Kornmarkt Arkaden | Mixed use

Kornmarkt Arkaden | Frankfurt-Altstadt

This is a mixed-use development that includes parts of the post-war BRH complex, close to Frankfurt's old town core (with parts of that being reconstructed for the Dom-Rmer Project). It started in October 2014.

There was an alternative design by Forster Architekten, among others.

I guess it will be a high quality building, but it looks so boring and oldfashioned...it's too big, maybe two or three buildings would be better

Xorcist: Obviously they intend to partition the facade, see here. So it hopefully won't be like one single monotonous facade, though I agree a clearer breakdown into single buildings would be better.

This project is a disaster. They should have torn down all post-war parts on this site, get rid of the horrific street tunnel and develop the whole area available by this from scratch, based on historic layout. Several different buildings with real slate-faced roofs instead of one big monotonous flat roof complex, especially rebuilding the Goldhutgasse and possibly reconstructing the 'Grosser Speicher' (which is still stored in city's magazines).

To be honest, the old Rechnungshof does look quite nice without all the crap that has been demolished already. Maybe not the worst decision to keep it.

All designs can only be shit, as all had to keep the old building which is completely destroying the urban space there. Maybe the facades will look somewhat ok when finished, but that's it. The space will always remain a disaster with way too huge flat roof blocks, no crossing alleys but the broad Berliner Strae, the tunnel ramp and useless meadows all within the OLDTOWN!

Nothing is gone forever. Who would have guessed what happens now in the Dom-Rmer-Area or next to Dresden's Frauenkirche just a mere two decades ago...

I love this. I'm glad they preserved the old mid-century building unlike what so many other places have been doing.

@Tolbert: nothing's gone forever. Bethmannhof, Rathaus buildings and nearby Goethehaus are still there, Rmerberg and Karmeliterkloster are only a few meters away. That's definitely old town, and a logical area for future reconstructions. And even if you don't reconstruct anything there (which is a shame, since every single part of historic Groer Speicher is still stored in city's magazines), at least the layout should be more old-town-like, thus more compartmentalized in architecture and restoring historic lanes, especially the Goldhutgasse. That's the continuation of Groer Hirschgraben (where Goethehaus is located) towards Rmerberg and this restoration would abolish the odd situation of Hirschgraben ending at Berliner Strae with every possibility for pedestrian traffic to further walk towards Main or Rmerberg being blocked by this ugly monstrous monolithic block of Bundesrechnungshof/"Kornmarkt-Arkaden".
And not to forget the roofs: flat roofs should be forbidden everywhere within the district called "Altstadt".

Think we have had enough reconstruction now in Frankfurt. Would rather see more nice modern buildings.

Frankfurt's old town is a tiny area. It definitely doesn't need modernist stuff calling for attention, there's other districts for attention-whoring contemporary architecture.

I mean, for real, it's tiny. Please let it become a place that feels old-town like again, thanks.
