Nice pictures and nice to see SA has a HSR. I wonder do the high-speed trains also get special wagons for ladies only?

Looking on the station at Mecca, I wonder - is that possible in future to create runthrough track, in the event of HSR extension?

Landbridge is in long-term persepective, if rideship will satisfy costs. But if it will be succesfull, there will be 2 or 4 tracks?

Saudi Landbridge supervision prequalification begins
09 Jun 2014

The Landbridge would link with the existing Saudi Railways Organization line in Riyadh, photo by SRO

SAUDI ARABIA: The Public Investment Fund’s railway development body Saudi Railway Co has invited applications to prequalify for the construction supervision consultancy contract for the Saudi Landbridge project. Applications are to be submitted by July 22.

The Landbridge would involve the construction of around 1 200 km of railway linking the port of Jeddah to Riyadh, where it would connect with the existing Saudi Railways Organization line to Dammam on the Gulf coast to provide a through route across the country.

SAR and its project management consultants Fluor Corp and Parsons Brinckerhoff are currently developing the contracting strategy and work package structure for the Landbridge project, which is expected to take 84 months from the start of the contract period to the end of the 12-month defects liability period.

The construction supervision consultant would be responsible for verifying contractors’ contractual, safety and quality compliance, as well as quality surveying to verify applications for payment.

SAR expects to appoint an operating partner for its North–South railway shortly, following the evaluation of bids from international consortia. Rather than outsource operations through the award of a long-term operating concession for the network, where commercial operations are already underway on the first phase, SAR is seeking to appoint a partner to assist with the development of domestic rail industry skills and provide SAR with the capability of running the network after around five years

Saudi railway training centre opens
Tuesday, July 01, 2014

A NEW college to train staff for Saudi Railway Company (SAR) has opened in Buraydah, on a section of the North - South Railway currently under construction.

Saudi Railway Polytechnic will be run by TQ Pearson, Britain, which administers a number of colleges in Saudi Arabia. It can accommodate up to 3000 students between the ages of 19 and 23, who will have to complete a two-week assessment before being admitted.

Courses will take three years to complete, and will cover both general skills training, such as learning to speak English, as well as specific courses in railway disciplines including rolling stock, infrastructure, and train operations. There will be an emphasis on on-the-job training.

These, however are the 4 new trains for SRO. Similar (in message # 190 you can see the differences) that are already in service on the Riyadh-Dammam (430 km) line, are formed for 1 diesel engine and 5 cars in push-pull to 180 km / h, with 288 seats, 152.22 meters.
The first 8 trains (2012-13), with maintenance for 4 years cost 13,13 M € each. They ERTMS.

I forgot to say that trains for SAR (the previous post) will bring wagons for cars

A greeting

Bahrain - Saudi rail link study nears completion
Friday, January 16, 2015

A feasibility study into the construction of a second causeway between Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, which will include the first rail link to Bahrain, will be completed in the first quarter of this year

Ms Maryam Ahmed Jumaan, under-secretary for land transport at the Bahrain Ministry of Transport, told delegates at the GCC Rail and Metro conference in Muscat this week that the study, which is being conducted by SNC Lavalin, is nearing completion and the results will be made public in March

Jumaan revealed to the conference that the study proposes two possible routes for the new 87km link and both would connect with new freight and passenger terminals situated on reclaimed land on either side of the sea, north of the existing road causeway.

It is proposed that the link will comprise of 28km of approach tracks, a 26km causeway and 10km bridge. Trains will travel at up to 120km/h and the study estimates that it could carry up to 143,000 containers in the first year of operation rising to 343,000 in 2030 and 602,000 by 2050. Construction is expected to take five to six years to complete with a provisional opening date of 2022
