Cabinet flags off east-west railway

JEDDAH: The Council of Ministers on Monday took a landmark decision to implement a land bridge project that would link the Kingdom’s east with its west with a railway line, bringing about a dramatic change in the region’s transport system.

The project, which will be financed by the state-owned Public Investment Fund, involves the construction of 950 km of a new line between Riyadh and Jeddah and another 115 km track between Dammam and Jubail and expansion of the current Riyadh-Dammam Railway.

“The Cabinet adopted a number of measures regarding the land bridge project as its implementation will be the same as the North-South Railway and the Haramain High-Speed Railway, with the Public Investment Fund financing the project’s infrastructure,” Culture and Information Minister Abdul Aziz Khoja said while explaining the Cabinet decision.

The Cabinet meeting, chaired by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah, also decided that the railway’s operator would be selected after inviting tenders from specialized companies. “The state will remain the owner of the infrastructure of all present and future railway projects,” Khoja said, quoting the Cabinet decision.

Transport Minister Jabara Al-Seraisry thanked King Abdullah for taking the initiative to implement the project, which will be the first rail link between the Red Sea and the Gulf. It will allow freight of cargo imported from East Asian countries via King Abdul Aziz Port in Dammam, and from Europe and North America via Jeddah Islamic Port. This would result in more transit cargo and savings in the regional freight economy.

SAUDI ARABIA: On March 14 Saudi Railway Co Chairman Mansour Al-Maiman signed a 533m riyals contract for CAF to supply and maintain five diesel push-pull trainsets for the North-South Railway.

The new trains are to be delivered within two years. Capable of operating at speeds up 200 km/h, they will have a restaurant car, family and prayer areas, and will be able to carry passengers' cars.

Al-Maiman said that the purchase would be financed by the Saudi government either directly or via the Public Investments Fund of which he is Secretary-General. Issuing sukuk Islamic bonds is another option.

CAF has also signed a contract to supply Saudi Railways Organization with an additional four push-pull trainsets, which together with the SAR contract is worth a total of €200m.

The Spanish firm says that its total orderbook in the 'demanding and competitive' Saudi market is now worth €400m.

SAUDI ARABIA: The Public Investment Fund has awarded Fluor Corp a 270m riyal contract to provide consultancy services for the Saudi Landbridge project.

Under the 84-month contract Fluor is to review engineering designs for the railway in conjunction with Parsons Brinckerhoff, and will define implementation strategies and be responsible for commissioning.

The Landbridge is a planned 945 km double-track railway linking Jeddah Islamic Port on the Red Sea coast with Riyadh, where it will connect with Saudi Railway Organization's existing 450 km line from Riyadh to King Abdulaziz Port at Dammam on the Gulf coast. A 115 km extension will run from Dammam to connect with the North-South Railway at Jubail.

The main traffic is expected to be containers, with 120 km/h running giving a Gulf to Red Sea journey time of around 18 h. Passenger services are also envisaged.

The government originally hoped that the Landbridge project would be developed through a PPP, but terms could not be agreed with private partners. In October 2011 the Council of Ministers opted to move ahead with the US$7bn scheme as a state project. The project will be led by the Public Investment Fund's Saudi Railways Co, which has been responsible for the North-South Railway.

Will the train pictured above also be manufactured by Talgo? Is Talgo responsible for all of Saudi Arabia's high speed trains?

there is other new high speed project from riyadh city to Makkah (Land bridge project) .. but still dont know will be spain high speed train or .. ..still dont know

I prefer the Spanish trains.. like (talgo 350) (ave 103)
