That seems to be a very "Greek" approach to things? In some other EU countries the rule of motion is "nothing is finished before everything is finished", but I seem to remember that at the time of the Athens Olympics several tramlines opened with a few stations missing. One of two planned railway connections to the new airport was finished in time - and that too initially without electrifications. Well... you couldn't get away with that in Switzerland.

I see an electrified single track in the picture second from the bottom. Is it Athens-Thessaloniki main line?

E.P.I.V.A.TI.S. ΝETWORK
PUBLIC TRANSPORT USERS AND PEDESTRIANS ASSOCIATION
GREECE

Re: HELLENIC RAILWAYS IN BIG CRISIS – THE GREEK GOVERNMENT’S RAIL RESTRUCTURING PLAN

Dear Colleagues,

As the unique Public Transport Users Association in Greece, we want to inform you briefly about current evolutions in the Hellenic State Railways (OSE) and the main points of the Transport Ministry’s Rail Restructuring Plan, from the rail transport user point of view.

OSE is a holding company, containing 4 daughter companies – one for the Infrastructure Management named EDISY, one for the Modernisation Works (financed from the EU Funding Programs) named ERGA-OSE, one for the Real Estate Development of their real estate named GAIA-OSE and one last for the Operation / Passenger and Freight Exploitation of the Network, named TRAIN-OSE.

The lack of state subsidy for 35 years and the combined cost of infrastructure maintenance and unprofitable passenger operation have created a deficit of about €daily. For this reason, the Greek Government decided to implement a Restructuring Plan for the Hellenic Railways. This Restructuring Plan has the following parameters (concerning passenger services) among others:

1. Complete separation of the Operational Company of OSE (the TRAIN-OSE) from the rest OSE Holding Company and merger of ERGA-OSE, EDISY and GAIA-OSE into one organization, responsible for infrastructure management, modernisation and real estate.
Rationalisation of the internal function of TRAIN-OSE, introducing one-man operation in suburban services, implementing modern management practices and offering benefits for early retirement to a big part of the existing staff in spite of significant shortage of personnel in prime line positions.

2. Creation of an independent authority for Accidents and Safety Affairs, in parallel to the Greek Rail Regulator, in order to fulfil the prerequisites of application of EU Rail Guidelines to the Greek system, pending the introduction of competition into the Greek railways planned for 2010. Completion of the current modernization works on the core network Patras-Athens-Salonica-Grecomacedonian border (conversion of the existing MG or SG line into a 200 km/h high speed line) and of the development of the Suburban Railway of Athens and total abandonment of the rolling improvement works in the regional rail network. That means that in the long term only 700 km of the existing 2500 km network will survive.

3. Further restriction of the already limited rail services in regional lines (now the majority of them has 3 – 8 services per direction daily, with the exception of the Salonica Suburban System, the Larissa-Volos line and the Kalamata Suburban System which have an hourly service throughout the day). Characteristically the line which serves the Historical site of Ancient Olympia has only 5 services every morning with no afternoon services!).

4. Restrictions will take place even on the main Athens-Salonica line services. These will be reduced to the half of the existing services, in spite of current trains (11 pairs daily) travelling overloaded and increased demand. Direct services from Athens or Salonica towards the branches of the main Athens-Salonica line (Volos, Kalampaka, Alexandroupolis etc) will be suspended.

5. Although EU-funded works on the MG Korinth-Tripolis-Kalamata line have finished last spring, and the line is now operational, no services have started so far. There is a plan to monitor performance and “profitability” of the line with only 3 daily services for only three months, in order to decide whether to keep it in operation. We consider this an indirect way of closing the line, as neither the frequency nor the time frame are sufficient for any successful usage. Greek Government is unwilling to pay Public Service Obligations for the regional train services, with the exception of a small number of them.

We want your active help, advices and support to cope with this situation (and in a probable future claim of us to the EU General Direction TREN). We firmly believe that the Green, Sustainable Mobility in Greece is not feasible without a efficient Railway system spanning the whole country.

@ Serdar:

The electified single track line seen under the new Axios bridge is the existing main line Thessaloniki - Eidomeni (- Gevgelija). The new section of this line between Polykastro - Eidomeni (from km 52+500 to km 72+850) is designed for double track but initially single track will be laid and electrified and both lines (old and new) will be in operation as a strange "double track". The new Axios bridge is only a few km south of Eidomeni and the Greek - FYROM border. The tracklaying works, signalling, electrification and new Polykastro Stn will be awarded soon.

South of Polykastro towards Thessaloniki for about 30 km (km 23 to km 53) the line has been realigned and upgraded 20 years ago (design speed 200 km/h, earthworks and structures for double track; single track has been laid, signalled and electrified).

-Yes.

-Yes electric trains.
Between Athina and SKA (= Acharnes Junction) underground will be a 1800m long section north of Agii Anargyri new Stn (seen under construction on imaginas photos). The line will be quadruple (two pairs of tracks). The cut+cover tunnel for the western pair is under advanced construction and will be opened to traffic in 2009. Thus electrification will reach a point just 2 km north of Athina Stn. Afterwards the existing surface pair will be removed and a second cut+cover tunnel will be built to accommodate the eastern pair of tracks.

Another 800m long underground section will be built just north of Athina new main stn but is still in design. Until this is built they plan to provisionally electrify 1-2 existing tracks up to Athina and farther south to Ruf Stn so that electric trains can reach Rentis depot and Piraias Stn where electrification works are already advancing.

If you consider that in 2009 the branch line to Halkidsa will also be electrified EMU's will be running from SKA north to Halkida, west to Kiato and east to the airport. (I'm not sure about south of SKA...)

Athina main stn ("Larissa Stn") will remain at the same level (surface). The underground works seen on the photos are for a broad underpass with shops.

Of course you have our help, but we can't do anything...wait until 2010, maybe someone private (maybe Onassis foundation, Niarchos, Anggelopoulos etc ) realises that Greece has much much potential in railways, think about petrol-price will reach about 2€/l !!! A good example is NTV in italy.
And please please privatise Proastiakos...or give it as a present to ATTIKO METRO

Try www.ergose.gr

ERGOSE is a subsidiary of OSE that manages all EU co-funded rail projects in Greece. You can find maps of the new alignment between Tithorea - Lianokladi (54 km, including the 9km long Kallidromo Tunnel, design speed 250 km/h) and Lianokladi - Domokos (52km, including the 7km long Othrys Tunnel and large viaducts, design speed 130 - 160 km/h) both in Central Greece on the main axis Athina - Thessaloniki.

Quite updated is also the following railway map of Greece where you can identify Tithorea, Lianokladi and Domokos: http://www.bueker.net/trainspotting/...ece/greece.gif (The electrification between Leptokarya and Larissa is already in operation)

According to railfaneurope.net yes:

In 2006 - as one of the last in EU member states - the OSE was split up in a network manager and an operating company. EDISY S.A. ("National Administrator of Railway Infrastructure") will run the Greek railway network, while TRENOSE S.A. will operate all passenger and freight trains, some busses, tourist trains and the telecom network. ERGOSE S.A. will - as now - run the construction projects.

and the actual situation is like it's written in railfaneurope, but i can't answer you your second question, i'm sry!
