December deadline for Greek rail privatisation
Thursday, August 13, 2015

THE privatisation of Greece's national train operating company Trainose and Hellenic Company for Rolling Stock Maintenance (Rosco) is set to restart after the board of directors of the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (HRADF), which is managing the sale, agreed on August 13 to set a December deadline for binding offers

After winning power in January's general election, Greece's leftist government announced it would carry out a review into the privatisations, which by this time were in their final stages

Athens

I saw that post dated 2011 and last week I was in Athens, and nothing has changed. Except the plastic covering for the piles of escalators is coming off. Piraeus station is similarly unfinished with five new platforms and only one being used. I used the line to Larissa which I think is 'one engine in steam' as I saw no signalling working. No departure boards working either. All very sad and a waste of money.

Saw sections of the closed yet rebuilt metre-gauge Peloponese east of Tripolis which was rusty and overgrown and the barrier equipment was being vandalised or damaged.

Quote:
The project consists of the construction of a modern complex in the area of Thriassio Pedio, where railway and freight activities currently carried out in facilities dispersed in various points of Athens will be assembled. The physical scopeof the construction project of Thriassio Complex includes:

1st OperationalPhase: infrastructure works, laying of part of the tracks, road works, irrigation, water supply, sewage and fire extinguishing networks, and building of certain rail facilities.

2nd OperationalPhase: laying of the remaining tracks inside the Complex (namely except for those already completed during the first operational phase), construction of buildings, signalling - telecommanding, electrification of lines inside the Complex, supply - installation of special equipment.
Project status:

Does anyone know if there is any kind of plan to re-open the remaining parts of the Peloponnese metre gauge network which are not being converted to the standard gauge?

I'm thinking more of the lines which I believe were relatively recently modernised, the lines connecting Corinth, Tripolis and Argos.

Or does the E65 motorway, among other things, make such an exercise a waste of time?

The OSE website says that these remaining metre gauge tracks remain officially part of the OSE network, but I presume that's just a run-of-the-mill legal statement.

There are no concrete plans really. There is supposedly a study to open the part between Corinth and Nafplio but this has been floating in the air many years now with no concrete steps.

The small part between Kalamata and Messini is opening for a few days every year to handle the traffic of a local holiday and it opened again during Xmas this year. The local government has promised to support it financially so that it will open all year but again so far this is just talk.

Finally, the regional government of Peloponese wants to activate the rest of the network for touristic trains but again nothing has really happened so far in that direction.

Thank you.

I guess therefore that the infrastructure will remain in place albeit unsued commercially until such time as some cash is found from somewhere to make things work again.

In the meantime, I noticed when browsing the aerial phtotos on Google, that a section of the Athens-Corinth metre gauge route is dual gauge. Is this so that standard gauge freight wagons can serve the industrial area around Eleusis?

I guess you mean the regional prefecture in Peloponese. There is no such a thing "regional government" in Greece. All projects in the country depend entirely on the central ministry.

Does anyone know approximately when electric loco will be able to run
from Thessaloniki to Athens? I see this depends of works on
Domokos-Tithorea section but what happens on Tithorea-Athens section?
Are there now any works on its electrification? Thanks a lot!
