It has quite an interesting "alien"-looking structure. Would be really cool if they designed the exterior to expose it in some way.

Agree, AP Design. The structure is very unique and integral to the tower form. Subjectively I find it very beautiful. Will miss the curved columns when they are all covered by the facade.

Thanks Oscillation. The second and third photos in particular remind me of SOM's original elevations. Compared to design intent, the voluptuous curves seem not visually eminent enough on hazy days. Hope the sun comes out more often in Tianjin.

I hated the renderings from the beginning and have always been far more excited by its scale than its actual design, but with the cladding progressing I think it looks substantially better than I expected and I'm excited for it completing

I'm a massive fan of glass boxes and I'm really not massive on curves on supertalls most of the time (with some very notable exceptions) but I do think the curvature of the walls with the glass facade looks lovely so far

I am disappointed that all the MSD boxes around it are roughly the same size (does anyone have a specific height for any of them as multiple searches online have got me nothing). I don't think a flat skyline is ever optimal, there should always be elements of staging and layering in my opinion. 6 or so extremely similar MSD buildings around the 180m mark with a single 500+ next to them just doesn't quite get the maximum out of the area for me. At least the nearest MSD tower should've been 50m taller or something. Anything to smooth the contrast at least a tiny bit

Thank you, Oscillation, for the great post as always. The first photo really shows off the tower's slenderness. Here's excerpt from SOM Structural Engineering (Schittch, C. [ed.], 2015, p. 61) about its uncommonly elegant form:

"The wind tunnel testing revealed that the total wind overturning forces on the tower could be reduced by more than 50% by adjusting the geometry of the tower. The resulting geometry resulted in great material savings and a more striking architectural form that directly expressed wind-engineering principles."

Interesting, how there are those townhouses so close to a 500 m skyscraper!

Have only thought of this tower sparkling under a half-moon. According to rendering from, of course, SOM.

Perhaps they won't be there in a few years time

Replaced by a tower eventually unless Tianjin has fairly strict heritage protection laws and the land rates become to expense for townhouses

It's a rough composition of 2 pictures: one is 50mm focal length (city), and the other one is 300mm (moon).
