It's not about being the best, it's about being a celebrity. Vladimir Guerrero is not a household name outside of Los Angeles, Nomar's is all over the country.

LA Galaxy to present Beckham on July 13

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The Los Angeles Galaxy will officially introduce new signing David Beckham on July 13, the club announced on Thursday.

But the former England captain, who joins from Real Madrid, faces a tough time reversing the Galaxy's fortunes.

The club are second from bottom in the six-team Major League Soccer Western Conference.

Beckham will be presented at the club's home stadium, the Home Depot Center, in the Los Angeles suburb of Carson.

No, he's a celebrity because of what he did with the Red Sox. Not many people even know that he's married to Mia Hamm outside of the sports world.

He's not doing great right now, but he was amazing in Boston.

It's not all about home runs, and if you don't even like baseball, then don't try to compete. If basketball is so great then why doesn't it get the ratings every day?

1st cuz the games are on espn/abc which both sucks....NBC had a far better coverage than both...only TNT is great.
2nd ...there hasnt been any great teams lately...spurs are a boring team nobody wants to watch....when the lakers were 3peating...it had ratings ...when the bulls were winning with jordan it had ratings.....players and sexy teams sells basketball.....unlike baseball that lives off the yankees, redsox to get their ratings.

All of the playoff games get ratings. I hate ESPN for only showing the Yankees and Red Sox and I hate watching those games because they're so overhyped, it's ridiculous.

You can't blame ratings on coverage. MLB has FOX, and the announcers we have to deal with are putrid.

Agree with you....sox vs yanks gets overhyped...typical espn just trying to get ratings.
NBC promoted the NBA like TNT is doing right now....Espn is not doing that....ABC just sucks...the camera position and shyt.

I agree, I hate how sports organizations are signing long term contracts. I wish that the playoffs would be switched around to different channels, I just hate how FOX does it. At least now we get one LCS with a different station, but I'm still not happy about it. I was looking forward to different stations, but I guess that's not happening for a long time.

Punt, Pass and Party

Downtowners Get Chance to Toss the Ball and Kick Coliseum Field Goals at NFL 101/201

by Jon Regardie

Every football fan has seen a game at the Coliseum, whether live or on television, whether the former Rams and Raiders, or the current USC Trojans. This week, about 500 of those fans will get to do something they might only have fantasized about: Catch or throw a pass on the field, or even kick a ball through the goal post.

The opportunity comes Thursday, July 12, with NFL 101/201, an event organized by the Los Angeles Sports & Entertainment Commission. Held for four years in a ballroom at the Hollywood & Highland complex, the celebration of all things pigskin now moves to the historic venue at the southern edge of Downtown Los Angeles.

NFL 101/201 kicks off at 5 p.m. with the "Play Like a Pro Experience," in which attendees can compete in five football skills events. It is followed by a buffet dinner catered by Wolfgang Puck, and then a panel discussion with figures including former pros Keyshawn Johnson and Marshall Faulk, Sports Illustrated writer Peter King and NBC sports reporter Andrea Kremer.

LASEC President Kathryn Schloessman spoke with Los Angeles Downtown News about what to expect, and why an EMT will be on hand.

Los Angeles Downtown News: How did NFL 101/201 start?

Kathryn Schloessman: Andrea Kramer was over at my house for dinner and asked why we didn't have an NFL event for women. I had never thought about it, and thought it was a great idea. The NFL said go for it, you have our support.

We started it as NFL 101 for women and we got a good response. But as we were getting close to the event, a lot of women who were hosting tables asked if they could bring guys, who were interested because [former pros] Ronnie Lott and Pat Haden were there.

In year two I went back and asked for comments and suggestions. One of the things people said was it's sexist if it's just for women. Why not open it up to both? We added NFL 201 because the guys were talking about strategy. It's spending time with players and coaches.

Q: Why move to the Coliseum?

A: The Sports & Entertainment Commission has always supported the Coliseum because it is owned by the city, county and state. More importantly, I don't think there is any question anymore that when football comes back to Los Angeles it will be here.

The venue has cool value. It's also historic.

Q: L.A. has no pro football team. So why is there a need for an NFL symposium?

A: My goal is to remind people that a Super Bowl is the biggest economic boost you can bring to a city, worth at least $300 million. We won't have a Super Bowl here until we have a team. We're missing out on that income as a city, which is a shame.

This keeps the interest in it, and more importantly, it makes sure the NFL knows we are continuing to keep the interest alive.

Q: How did "Play Like a Pro" come about?

A: We've been wanting to do this for a few years. We were limited in the ballroom because we didn't want people lobbing balls into the lights and costing us a fortune. It's like a mini NFL experience. We all go to a lot of events, and we know that when you have a chance to be interactive and people can participate, people love it.

Q: What skills events are there?

A: You'll go through five different competitions: There is throwing and accuracy, where you have to throw the ball through a little hole. We'll have a wide receiver challenge, you run around a cone and make a catch. We'll time you in the 40-yard dash, and there is a field goal kick.

We'll also have an EMT on site in case people get too excited.

Q: Who were the past speaker highlights?

A: The best by far was [former coach] Bill Walsh three years ago. It was so interesting to see how much he is revered. Quarterback Warren Moon, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame, did our event twice. Ronnie Lott has done it twice, too.

Q: Who is new on the panel this year?

A: Keyshawn Johnson will be great with his Coliseum legacy. And Marshall Faulk. We also have Jim Mora, the former coach and NFL analyst.

Q: What advice do you have for NFL 101/201 rookies?

A: Bring clothes so you can participate and get there early. Otherwise you'll leave wishing you had been able to kick a ball through the uprights.
