Newport: Crap town or future great city?

Here are some of my pics of Newport. From some you'll see why the place has gotten such a bad reputation... Others, I hope, illustrate its potential. Enjoy!

Future great city. Could do something with those arcades; get rid of the dingy look and its already there!

Definately, the arcades are a real asset. Shame there's only two of them though. Newport Arcade looks great, now they need to do the same thing to Market Arcade. I personally think it's definately 'future great city', if anyone doesn't believe me just go to the Newport Developments thread and have a look at what's being built; truely world class in my opinion.

I'll take some more photos when I go home next weekend, I'm keen to see how the Kingsway development is getting on.

Newport's a pretty ugly looking rundown city but I'm sure by 2010 it will be a completely different place. Really looking forward to Friars Walk and city Spires being developed

There's load of potential there, probably won't be long til some huge regeneration project throws it into the spotlight.

Without doubt the worst town in the UK I've ever visited. People were fighting in the streets ( no I'm not kidding ) and its the only place I've ever seen in Britain that actually reminded me of a ghetto with groups of people doing but nothing but standing on street corners and openly dealing drugs. Its an epic shithole. On the bright side it can only get better.

I've been born and raised in Newport too, the town, or city itself isn't that bad, it's just the people that ruin it. There are decent people in Newport but they are a minority, the rest have a village mentality most of which being chavs.

It is an epic shithole, in all respects. While i cannot wait to see the massive developments finished in Newport, I wont be staying here for the rest of my life, I've seen and been on the recieving end of some of the worst shit in this city, while I can be proud of its hstorical achievements and landmarks, I have never felt at "home" in Newport. Ever, thats 23 years. Cardiff on the other hand, I feel at "home" in whenever i am there.

The problem with Newport is you can't feel proud about anything because its often vandalised within weeks of being built. Or neglected, or subjected to the worst council planning decisions in the western hemisphere.

It really doesn't matter how many licks of paint, new designs, new buildings they build, Newport will still be shit unless most of its people ditch the "I'm so hard innit" attitude.

I went to Newport on business last year, delivering goods to a restaurant ( I use the term loosely ) in Commercial Street - WTF is that place about?! Its like the hood, gangs of young men standing around on corners, boarded up windows and the occasional bling beemer or merc pulling up to a group. I've never seen anything like it before or since. Also has one of the most annoying roundabouts at the top of the street I've ever seen. Then there was the shaming themselves in the FA Cup too. I dont like slagging a place but it was horrible, was like it was in a timewarp harking back to the depression and decay in the industrial towns and cities in the 80s. There are some nice developments going on and its good to see things are starting to improve buy it will take a while!

All urban areas in Wales are pretty much like that, other than Cardiff. Any town that relied on heavy industry is going to be a shithole. If it's going to take Newport a long time to recover I dread to think how long it will Luton! I don't like slagging places off but doesn't Glasgow have the most deprived area in the country?
