Miami -- Calle Ocho & Shenandoah Neighborhood

Took these photos in March, 2007. Calle Ocho photos start around SW 22nd Ave and go over to SW 13th Ave. Then I walked around the residential Shenandoah neighborhood just south of Calle Ocho.

I love the houses and streetscapes of Miami and most South Florida for that matter, because it looks like no other place in the whole world. I've been in Miami during a hurricane before and it still just looks so sunny and so alive without looking like you're living on an island. I love the backdrop of the skyscrapers behind all the neighborhoods as well, it's really cool!

It was a question. Not relating the the BOP, hence the "anyways".

This area is predominantly Cuban, but not exclusively so. I am not Cuban or Hispanic and lived in Shenandoah for 3 years and really enjoyed the neighborhood.

Shenandoah, what's the background behind that name?

PS: Where do all the Nicaraguans live?

^ I'm not sure about the how the name of Shenandoah came about for the neighborhood. Maybe it was named after the Shenandoah Valley up in Virginia. Most of the housing was built between the 1920's and 1940's, so maybe that was a popular name back then.

I don't know if there is a predominantly Nicaraguan neighborhood in Miami... I may be wrong but my guess is that Nicaraguans are interspersed with the Cubans, Columbians, Peruvians, etc. Someone else may know better as I only speak minimal Spanish and do not know enough of the latino culture in Miami to say for sure.

My neighborhood, Sweetwater, is sometimes called Little Nicaragua. Although, in reality, I think Nicaraguans account for a very small percentage of the population in Sweetwater.

Great pics, by the way.

Nice shots. Always good to see a different side to this city, instead of all the usual touristy parts, which are great though, but there's still always more to see IMO. Good thread.

Miami is soo beautiful. I just arrived in Germany, back from there. Nice pics! It is really interesting to know the foundation and history of it with all the famous people living there.
