Really? When I was in there last week it reminded me a lot of the time I ended up in Reflex in Wakefield. Screens full of drinks promos, ropey beer, crap music and a really strange crowd (for the Northern Quarter) that looked more akin to Peter Street.

I've not been for a while, but aside from its 'quirky' decorative taste, I've always thought it was great. (All that tack, like indoor water features etc, is actually homage to Frank 'Foo Foo' Lammar, after whom the bar is named.)

It's not really Northern Quarter is it? It's just as close (if not closer) to the village. It generally gets a mixed crowd - probably 50:50 gay/straight, with more gay clientele (almost exclusively sometimes) during the week. Can't say I've ever noticed screens with drinks promotions though. I think that might be a new development. I'll have to reserve judgement on those until my next visit.....

Event @ Dukes next week:
Quote:
Castlefield Residents - we need you
Castlefield Forum is launching a new community website for your area: come along, view and contribute.

Date: Wednesday 23 September 7pm-8.30pm
Venue: Alberts Shed

If you love living here and want to help secure Castlefield's future please join members of Castlefield Forum as we:
  • launch our new website
  • outline recent progress
  • canvass your ideas
  • make new plans

Two years ago Phil Griffin wrote about the declining condition of Castlefield on ManchesterConfidential.com

His article touched a nerve and led to the establishment of Castlefield Forum, chaired by Jonathan Schofield, editor of Manchester Confidential, and a passionate advocate for Castlefield, and actively supported by Cllr Pat Karney and CityCo. The Forum had made progress in addressing maintenance issues in the area, galvanising some of the responsible agencies into action and suggesting ideas for the future.

Lighting has been improved, slippery surfaces rectified, eyesores cured and there are even bridge-painting plans afoot. There's talk of adding a range of plants, re-equipping and re-signing the historical sites and hosting more family-friendly events, and improving the sense of community. There are much more ambitious ideas being mooted as well.

Recently Sir Howard Bernstein, Chief Executive of Manchester City Council has picked up the Castlefield banner. This signals the Council's serious intent and has made the private sector sit up and take notice. A report is due back soon.

But we still need you, the Castlefield residents, busy as you are, to get involved.

You live here because Castlefield is special and guess that, like us, you want to keep it that way and improve it.

Such a difference from last year, I think thats the extent of the new landscaping looking at the plans, apart from a bit of paving, although there is maybe a tree missing from that decking.

That old visitor signage is such an embarrassment

Looks like the greenery is to be removed from the viaduct, planning app has just been approved for the removal of the trees(!) on there, permission apparently required.

Info from the docs:
Quote:
Castlefield Viaduct MAJ/289

Proposed De-vegetation of deck surface and structure 2009/10

Background:

BRB, the owners of the Grade 2 Listed viaduct structure, are proposing to undertake works which are initially safety related and maintenace in nature, and (in later years) refurbishment works.

After consulting with Manchester City Council's Planning office, (Mr Llewellyn), from August 2009 onwards, we have recently been advised the aspect of tree removal needs formal consent.

Works Content:

Phase 1 (2009/10)
  • Fit secure gated access to east end of viaduct.
  • Erect safety handrailing along viaduct.
  • Carry out progressive de-vegetation to allow our consultants to carry out an ecological survey and a structural inspection.
  • De-scale to remove loose and potentially loose materials to prevent falls onto lands below.
  • Clear existing drain holes.
Phase 2 (prospectively 2012/13)
  • Refurbishment and repair works as identified from Phase 1 above.

Its going to look quite bare without the acquired vegetation.

It's already been cleared. There are proper stumps where the trees have been cut down. Nature will grow anywhere given the chance.

Read this thing in the guardian about a park on a disused rail line in new york. It would be a wonderful thing for that viaduct in my opinion.

Sleuth’s result of the week
The removal of the worst mural in history in Castlefield. This has come about through Confidential’s Castlefield campaign in which local residents and businesses are trying to ensure Castlefield becomes beautiful - with massive help from the City Council. This ill-drawn abomination is on its way at last.

So great to hear that some money is being piled into Castlefield, IMHO potentially one of the best parts of Manchester second to none. The bridge remedial works is music to my ears. Check this:

You can just see the silver paint from the bridge surrounding the person.

Same rope, same spot. Tied to that abandoned building. Belter.

Funding for a bit of new towpath lighting:
Quote:
3.5 Chief Executive’s Regeneration – Britannia Basin Environmental Scheme.

This project will consist of placing 12 lighting columns along the Bridgewater Canal tow path (from Hulme leading into Manchester City Centre) The maintenance of the lighting columns will be incorporated within an existing PFI lighting contract. The lighting will increase community safety and reduce the fear of crime. It will contribute to the economic development of the City Centre. An increase to the capital budget of £48,000 in 2009/10 is requested, funded by Section 106 contribution.

Not purely Castlefield related, the current tentative nomination covers parts of Worsley through to Ancoats. Will be interesting to see whether any new application passes their apparent tighter criteria, with the cost/benefit consideration. How likely is a full listing?

Quote:
UK to put forward ‘fewer and fitter’ places for future UNESCO World Heritage Site designation
22 January 2010 11:07
Department for Culture, Media And Sport (National)

A competition to find more cultural and natural heritage places of global importance , which are fit to become future UK World Heritage Sites, was launched today by Culture Minister Margaret Hodge. In future the Government will put forward fewer sites for consideration by UNESCO, with a streamlined application system to help ensure success.

Local authorities, and others, throughout the UK including the Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies will have the opportunity to nominate such sites for assessment by an independent expert panel. A new ‘Tentative List’ of candidate sites will then be drawn up for submission to UNESCO in 2011, with the first nomination going forward from 2012. Those on the last UK Tentative List, drawn up in 1999, which have not so far gone forward for consideration by UNESCO, will be able to apply again for inclusion on the new list.

Margaret Hodge said:

“To be designated a World Heritage Site is a real honour and a rare privilege. It can bring social and economic benefits to areas chosen, and it’s great for tourism, promoting the profile of our cultural and natural heritage to the world in an eye-catching way. But bidding for World Heritage status carries a cost, and we want to be sure that public resources are well deployed. So, in future, we want a process that ensures that only sure-fire winners with outstanding universal value go forward. This means we will make fewer nominations, selecting sites from a new, shorter and more focused list."
http://nds.coi.gov.uk/Content/detail...09&SubjectId=2

Site area from tentative listing:
Quote:
Manchester and Salford (Ancoats, Castlefield and Worsley)

The proposed Site comprises the hillside of Worsley Delph and the western half of the Worsley Village Conservation Area focussed on the Bridgewater Canal, and then follows the canal to the Barton Swing Aqueduct in the Bartonupon-lrwell Conservation Area, before looping round Strettord to enter the Castlefield Conservation Area, much of which is included in the Site. It then follows the Rochdale Canal from Castlefield Basin to Ancoats, widening to include the two canal warehouses east of Dale Street and the south western part of Ancoats Conservation Area.

Current 15 locations on the list:
  • Manchester and Salford (Ancoats, Castlefield and Worsley) (21/06/1999)
  • Chatham Naval Dockyard (21/06/1999)
  • Darwin's Home and Workplace: Down House and Environs (21/06/1999)
  • Fountain Cavern, Anguilla (21/06/1999)
  • Gibraltar defences (03/01/1996)
  • Lake District (03/01/1996)
  • Monkwearmouth and Jarrow Monastic Sites (21/06/1999)
