SKorea to build world's second-highest skyscraper
SEOUL, March 29, 2007 (AFP) - South Korea's Seoul city government said Thursday it has approved a plan to build the world's second-highest skyscraper in the central business district, officials said. The state-run Korea Railroad Corp's plan to build a 150-story building, measuring 615 metres (2,029.5 feet) high, by 2013 in Yongsan was endorsed on Wednesday, city government officials said. The city's urban construction committee set the ceiling on the planned building's height at 620 metres, they said. The building would be the world's second-highest after the Burj Dubai, a tower now under construction in the United Arab Emirates that will reach 830 metres high, they added. The Korea Railroad Corp said it would need consultations with the city government -- as both still remain at odds over other terms and conditions of the development project -- before the construction. jkw/jc SKorea-skyscraper-construction AFP 290610 GMT MAR 07 Renderings as of April 2012: Quote:

1. Don't make threads with such titles. There should have to be name of project, city name and short tech data.
2. There are tones of projects between 600 and 700 meters, so you can't say really if it's going to be second. 3. Is it IBC?

There you go COTH.. fixed the thread title.. I'm not saying "World's second tallest"... if you read the story from Agence France Press... you'll see they are quoting the developers who say it'll be the second tallest in the world.

If Al Burj gets the OK then Burj Dubai will be the 2nd tallest before 2013.

5 Skyscrapers to Change Seoul Landscape
By Kim Rahn
Staff Reporter Korea's skyline is undergoing a facelift and will be a mere shadow of itself after all announced construction plans, including a 620-meter building in Yongsan, central Seoul, are completed. Seven skyscrapers of more than 100-story buildings are in the design stage, five in Seoul, one in Inchon and one in Pusan. On Wednesday, the Seoul Metropolitan Government reviewed a Korea Railroad (Korail) blueprint to develop an international business zone near Yongsan Station and permitted construction of a building of up to a 620-meters high there. The planned zone is 134,000 pyong (332,575 square meters) of land in Yongsan, where railroads, train depots, a train maintenance center, logistics centers and a postal office are currently located. The 150-story skyscraper, to be completed around 2013, will be the third highest building in the world, followed by Burj Dubai now under construction in United Arab Emirates and Tower of Russia in Russia. The 160-story Burj Dubai, scheduled for completion next year, will be more than 800 meters high. Currently, the world's highest skyscraper is the 508-meter-tall Taipei Financial Center in Taiwan with 101 stories. In Korea, the 261-meter-tall Tower Palace apartment in Togok-dong of southern Seoul is the highest. The approval of the 620-meter-high building is likely to lead other skyscraper projects _ the 555-meter-tall second Lotte World in Chamsil, eastern Seoul; the 580-meter-tall international business center in Sangam-dong of northern Seoul; the 960-meter-high financial and tourism hub building in Chung-gu, downtown Seoul; the 450-meter-high global business center in Ttuksom, eastern Seoul; the 610-meter-tall Inchon Tower in Songdo; and the 510-meter-high Lotte World in Pusan. The design of the second Lotte World in Chamsil has already been approved but construction has been delayed as the Air Force opposes the project. The location is close to a military airport in Songnam, Kyonggi Province, and the military and Lotte are negotiating the issue. Seoul city used to eagerly encourage the business center in Sangam-dong to construct buildings of over 100-stories. But following the 150-story skyscraper in Yongsan, some expect the Sangam project to be scaled down. But the city government permitted development of only 84,000 pyong in Yongsan out of the total 134,000, saying the other 50,000 pyong should be developed later after rearranging the region's traffic system and road facilities. Korail said it could not expect maximum effect from the partial development, saying it may have to reconsider the plan. ``We think Seoul city plans to link our development of the 50,000 pyong of land with its project to improve nearby Sobuichon-dong. It is inappropriate to force Korail to participate in the city's own project,'' a Korail official said. Korail said it would consult with the city government. It planned to award contracts to construction companies soon and begin construction this year. But the schedule is likely to be delayed until Korail and Seoul city settle the issue. |

I love how they say all these projects are all in the design stage, some have been for the best part of 10 years or so! Another Korean supertall proposal...well it is almost Aprils fool day, more pie in the sky rather than tower in the sky.

The various district governments of Seoul are involved in a not so secret competition with each other, which I believe makes Seoul rather unique among mega-cities. Yongsan-Gu has the connections, land, and location to make this thing go. Not sure about the other proposals though.

These are some renderings, but the current design could soon be void due to a redesign and negotiations with the government.
