This entire project looks like an architectural amusement park, not like an integral part of the existing city. I like some ideas (greenery, towers etc.) but in my opinion the masterplan doesn't fit the area and the city. I think I don't like it.

actually I like it cuz it shows the contrasts of both older, old, recent, new, and modern Seoul in a way and different types of architecture around it from low-rise houses, buildings to apartment blocks to towers and the Mt. Namsan as well. Hopefully it get starts getting built cuz I'm moving back to Seoul next Fall to enlist in military service!!

Well, I think that you're kind of right, but there are a number of reasons why it looks like that:
1. The entire Yongsan district is, right now, little more than a combo of railyards and a military base.
2. Most of Seoul is fairly generic right now, at least when looking at large areas, because it developed quickly, so most of the city lacks anything really identifying that would help anything new "fit" with anything old.
3. Seoul is, after all, big.

I still find it frankly dissappointing that Seoul really doesn't have a "face", something that people see and know immediately where it is they're looking at. They've got to start somewhere, so where better than in the middle of the city with a massive, gorgeous project that has a bit more fun than your average commie block?

@brian: I don't see the contrast within the master plan. The only contrast is the dissimilarity of the newly designed part and the authentic city. This is the problem, contrasts are fine, they revivify city and make it more real, but the city planning is to organize, connect and create potential of future development and I think that the current design even kills this potential. Really the urban planning has its own rules and the master plan needs to be done in a different way. It's not only scale, the process is different. The urban planners always keep saying "don't think too architecturally" because concepts must solve problems of another sort. The good master plan just have to work well, getting rid of being fashionable or iconic. There's no place for the style of an architect unless it is a method of how they work. Sure it will be impressive (if finished), filled up with diverse activities but still in some way a blind spot.

It's the duty to enlist in military service or you just want to?

@aquaticko: you are right too, I know the Yongsan needs redevelopment. I think Seoul already has a face, besides that type of planning isn't new. It will not shape the new face of Seoul, maybe only make a lot of noise. Yes Seoul is big and vibrant, this is the positive factor in this situation.

I think it's about a time for change hehe. Afterall, I've lived over 21 years of my life abroad (Both in Latin America and North America), kinda miss homeland and would love to spend and experience the rest of my 20s in my motherland. I think I'll enlist as a Interpreter Solider or KATUSA (part of American military in Korea). After that, I think I'll consider some place else...maybe somewhere in Europe...or maybe even Australia who know...I like being adventurous with life!

No its not, they just have problems buying out these comie blocks so it will proceed only on the land previously occupied by trains depot. So the main tower goes forward.

oh i see so the surrounding park on the coast line will suffer due to the issues and maybe some smaller new buildings? it is sad that the commiblocks may ruin the view but im happy it doesnt put the project at risk. and i think there are still chances to remove the commieblocks later on while the buildings are in construction or even when already finished.

I'm skeptical and the fact that the new mayor guy is cancelling projects is a bit of an exaggeration. I appraise Sehoon Oh (former Mayor of Seoul) for beautification of Seoul City. However, Seoul's debt have tripled since he took office which is in a way negative as well. We'll just have to wait and see

Agree with you. "it is sad that the commiblocks may ruin the view"

As you say seoul have to demolished commieblocks later on while the buildings are in construction or even when already finshed.
But i'm afraid seoul's new mayor is so called "left-wing politician"
He want to deleted pre-seoul mayor's policy.

Compensation and people's resist That is simply an excuse, and nothing more

He(park) tried not to do it on some pretext or other.

he afraid that "Han-river renassiance project's sucess"
So that reason now he during put obstacles in IBD
