Actually the renovated Bank hotel is no longer that dykey, at least on a Sunday afternoon, it totally goes off!!

Great photo's, I love ***town and used to live there, although the traffic drove me away I now live within walking distance.

Sunday luch people spotting is always fun, and you can't beat the restaurants! Cheap, fresh and always good!

In the next lot of photos I have crossed to the other side of the road from the previous shots and walked from the City Road end of King St down towards Enmore Road. The sky got very interesting on this part of the walk and it eventually went from being sunny, stinking hot and humid to pissing down!

Having said all that I wouldn't like to see ***town changed TOO much, as it might lose its character and diversity. I think Glebe serves as a more posh version of ***town.

I agree about the awnings. As long as they're not scrappy, retractables would be good but you need something. When it's hot it's HOT and the sun can really make things uncomfortable in the shopfront. I was walking along a row of shops in Kogarah today at about 3pm and it was relief being under awnings and today wasn't a super hot day here either.

I think Lygon street in Carlton has a few buildings with retractable awnings. They CAN look really chic if done properly and really enhances the look of the whole building. Part of the reason people don't notice the history and the quality of buildings in Newtown is due to the awnings in place.

Great pics LanceDriver!! You captured the main parts of Newtown well! Thanks for that!

This is my favourite photo:

It looks just as beautiful in real life too!

About the awnings, I agree that they take some of the glamour away from these buildings, and tend to prevent people from realising how nice some of the buildings are above them, but there are both advantages and disadvantages to them I guess. If it rains for instance, you have good shelter to go under. I tend to forget that awnings are even there in most cases. The only time it surprised me was when I took a bus from Glebe to Circular Quay, and I was surprised when seeing the huge amount of beautiful old facades that Sydney has, and how so many people would not realise they're even there due to the awnings.

cheers, there will be one more load soon, the walk up and back down enmore rd. on another note, as the photos show, australias cars are definitely getting smaller. gone are the days of everyone owning a big ford or holden. unless it's a 4wd most cars are mid to small now.

I had forgotten that I hadn't finished this thread until someone reminded me of it in a recent Newtown discussion. I've dug up the rest of the walking tour and it picks up just as I turned from King St into Enmore Rd

Heading down Enmore Road - I rushed a few of these shots because of the rain that poured down so due to the limited light in some the end result was a slight blur but you get the idea.

I have finished going down one side of Enmore Road and back again and am now back on King St, and it was clearing up a bit after being very wet, dark and grey...

Believe me, urban renewal on any scale would ruin Newtown. It is perfect just the way it is. Any attempt to 'clean it up' would destroy the area's character. People don't live in (or visit) Newtown to see rows of clean, perfectly restored Victorian streetscapes. It is quite a bohemian area, much like Brunswick St in Fitzroy (but much better in my opinion). And yep, if you haven't been to the Bank recently it has been totally redone inside and out the back. I am not sure how the resident dykes will react but there will be no more Wednesday 'womens' pool night thats for sure

This is one of Sydney's best suburbs in IMHO.

Would be my first stop if I were to go Sydney side.

Doesn't seem to have demolished anything since 1939! On the awnings - they are an important part of a shop and most of these buildings would have been designed with awnings. However these have been bastardized or replaced with modern versions that are completely out of character with their parent building. Big bold advertising doesn't help either. Bring back the wrought iron and pressed tin!

Thanks Lancedriver.

What is the deal with that 2007 building in the second last shot? Not only is it the newest building in the series, it's also the ugliest! So Nasty.

Thanks Lancedriver! Newtown/Enmore is one of my favourite parts of Sydney. The amazing thing about King St (and to a lesser extent Enmore Road) is that it's SOOO long - must be one of the longest high streets in Australia - and almost all of it has been preserved. There are only a few new buildings, so the Victorian streetscape is intact.

i think they were trying to make it fit into the historic streetscape and maybe tried too hard. you see something similar in the photo where the 1997 building next door to the enmore theatre is trying to look somewhat retro-deco but doesn't quite pull it off.

Surely those hideous overhead powerlines could be buried? I dont see how they add much character to the area.

Cheers Lance, it doesn't get much more extensive than that! Newtown is home away from home.

According to local council: Enmore Road and King Street together comprise a 9.1 kilometre round-trip of some 600 shopfronts. The main shopping strip of Newtown is the longest and most complete commercial precinct of the late Victorian and Federation period in Australia.

I thought Oxford St might give it a run for it's money in length, but it's obviously more broken up.
Sydney Rd Brunswick is the longest continuous historical strip in Melbourne, around 4.5km (one way). High St Northcote is marginally smaller.
By comparison, Europes longest high street is Streatham High Rd in South London, about 3.5km. There may be larger old neighbourhood strips in North America, but King St holds up pretty well!

i thought this was the most fantastic thread: full of atmosphere, and reminded me of many road trips into Sydney from Melbourne or Canberra, when the grit of the real city starts closing in.

Also loved the wet day shots: you can feel the humidity - people still dressed in light clothes, and air-cons in quite a few of the windows. well done Lance Driver.

cheers! it was a strange day that was extremely warm and humid so most people weren't prepared for the heavy rain that came over, me included. then it all dissapeared and went away with the sun back out - bright, dark and bright again all in one afternoon. you can see the mood in the sky before it let loose. and yes, newtown is full of atmosphere and makes for a great stroll watching all the mixed bags of headies.

Cool. I wonder where the "Coles New World" (as mentioned in the lyrics) was? No sign of it nowadays. Maybe where Franklins is now?

Okay, just found it in Wikipedia! Coles New World was located on the current site of the Dendy Cinemas.
