This is the pic which impresses me most of all. Look at all that new waterfront! And it even links up to the Business Bay extension and has a massive lake at the end. Amazing! They should extend it all the way to the Arabian Canal through Dubai Land. Now that would be awesome!
I'm not too impressed by this skinny, wriggly extension. A feeble attempt at increasing waterfront properties. The playing around with water in land and land in water isn't creative anymore.

I have a huge question mark on this entire development.

erm...again its part of making the Nad Al Sheeba an even more of a fantastic horse racing venue to host the Dubai World Cup...so it includes a canal...the creek extension thing is part of a bigger plan...as shown in the pic that Face put up. they have to make money on it some how...so the waterfront property thing is apart of it.

They can build a fantastic horse racing venue that's not as big as this. And why include residential areas and all those 'accessory' developments around the racecourse? Is it a must now for every development in Dubai, whether it was a theme park, sports venue, or factory to include luxury accomodation as part of the package?

It makes sense if people working in the area would want to live close-by, but most of these developments are ultra-luxurious.

How many concerts is Dubai going to hold simultaneously round the year to fill up the grand stand as some people suggest would happen? Dubai Sports City officials said their stadia will be hosting concerts too.

Dubailand has an equestrian theme park which should have been part of Meydan, other than that I don't get what Meydan is all about, except being horse-lovers' wet dream. For non-horsie people it's pointless.

I agree with you abt the fact that most of these developments are aimed at the really rich...but if u were living along SZR or in Deira...wuld u rather dive to Nad Al Sheeba or Dubailand...i choose the first one...for the ppl who live in new dubai...they can drive to the other one. As for the concerts...well they always find a way to fill it up...the local racing season goes on for a long time...so that takes care of Meydan.

ok, where are these people going to come from?

Grandstand 60,000.
Suites restaurnts e.t.c. which makes up over half the strutures length will provide another 20,000
with an area that size probably 40-80,000 in the padoock.

120- 160,000 people.

Yeah. Right.

btw, there will be a purpose built rugby facility for the world championships and perment venue for the sevens.

trust me when I say that those tickets are sold out well in advance for the world cup. Thats why its being built, specifically for that purpose.

and as for the sevens...again...they dont necessarily have to build a new one...the dubai police club is an excellent venue and if the 60K stadium at dubailand is done it culd be the venue...but im assuming they will have multiple venues in Dubai and not just one...

Well they need a perment venue for the sevens, and the schedule means multiple fields which teams can move between to play several times a day. its not essential to be ajacent, but i think in the long term it wouild be better. there is no reason they cant build where the club is now. this project doesnt seem to be doing to much over where the canal is, so it could be incorporated.

Meydan City first phase sold out

The first phase of the iconic Meydan City development has sold out.

Master plan perspectives.

Meydan City, located at the beginning of the Dubai-Al Ain Road, adjacent to Dubai Properties (Business Bay), will be in the heart of Dubai's burgeoning new urban frontier, and within close proximity to Meydan Racecourse.

Through the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the Meydan City and Racecourse development was launched on the eve of the 2007 Dubai World Cup.

Only seven kilometres from the Dubai International Airport and a five-minute drive from Sheikh Zayed Road, Burj Dubai and Dubai Festival City, Meydan City covers more than 40 million sq ft GFA (gross floor area) on a land size of around 15 million square feet.

Meydan Chairman Mr Saeed H Al-Tayer said, 'Meydan City has been snapped up quickly by investors who realise the vast potential of its location. With its strategic positioning as the future inner city of Dubai, coupled with its lush greenery and waterways and its proximity to Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary, it's no surprise as to just how popular the development has already become.'

The plots within the self-contained community boast canal, waterfront and promenade views, and the water elements will become the normal urbanscape in Meydan City.

The centrepiece, Meydan Marina, is to be located in the core of the development and offers berthing facilities for more than 80 leisure yachts and boats.

Plans also include a tramline which will run from Meydan City to Meydan Racecourse and can carry around 10,000 people every hour.

Bicycle lanes alongside roads and parks will serve as an alternative means of clean and healthy transport, while pedestrian movement will be enhanced with around 7km of promenade walks via climate-controlled arcades.

Other features of Meydan City, include a first-rate shopping centre and superlative central park, while all retail outlets - located on the ground and first floors - will be interlinked.

Meydan City will sit alongside Meydan Racecourse, which has a target opening for the 2010 Dubai World Cup meeting and will span 76 million square feet.

Meydan Racecourse will feature a world-class grandstand and state-of-the-art dirt and turf tracks, a championship 18-hole golf course, office palaces, a five-star hotel with approximately 400 rooms and villas, while the enterprise will also serve as a major business and conference district.

You know what I wish they'd do? Integrate these projects with what goes on next door.
This here is a pretty massive thing, next door are 2 even more massive projects, the lagoons and business bay, both of which have towers so will be pretty dense and have lots of people. I read lots of stuff about transportation, etc within the project but nothing about how things will work with anything outside. No mention of transport links with other projects, roads, how the development will fit in with everything else going around, etc.
This is a problem with most dubai projects.

Companies should arrange helicopters/ heli-pools for their employees that live far away! That would be awesome!

I know its not feasible, but......

Groups bid for grandstand
CONSTRUCTION UAE
1 Jun 2007

At least two groups have bid for the contract to build the 60,000-capacity grandstand at the Meydan racecourse development in Nad al-Sheba. They include the local/UK Al-Naboodah Laing O’Rourke, and the local Arabtec Construction in joint venture with Malaysia’s WCT. The grandstand should open in time for the Dubai World Cup in 2010. The local Meydan is the client (MEED 27:4:07).
