2012 budget a disappointment for Sabah
By Datuk Yong Teck Lee

Kota Kinabalu, 7 October 2011

It is clear that the target groups for the RM 232.8 billion election budget for election purposes are teachers, civil servants, Felda settlers, military and police personnel and the Indian community. These are the voter groups that the BN is now trying to improve upon compared to the results of the last general elections in 2008.

However, for Sabah, what it is glaringly missing is the proposed 300 MW natural gas power plant in Lahad Datu to supply the east coast of Sabah when the controversial coal-fired power plant was cancelled earlier this year.

Another disappointment for Sabah is the long overdue upgrading of the Sandakan airport to international standard, as promised by the Sabah Chief Minister last October 2010. In the 10th Malaysia Plan (2011 to 2015), there is no mention of such plan for Sandakan. Now that the 2012 budget has missed out the Sandakan airport, the proposed Sandakan airport upgrading has been confirmed to be another empty promise of the BN government.

The Sabah business community will also be similarly disappointed that the Prime Minister makes no mention of any review of the Cabotage policy that unfairly causes higher prices in Sabah. Hence, the cabotage policy to protect a few shipping companies will continue to plague the manufacturing sector in Sabah. The BN continues to ignore Sabah's key concerns because Sabah is considered as "fixed deposit" for the BN.

The budget surprisingly misses out the urgent need of a comprehensive manpower policy to tackle the over dependence on the 2 million foreign workers in the country and a low wage regime in the country concurrent with the crisis of youth unemployment among local Malaysians. As such, I consider the high expectations of the 2012 budget have turned into disappointments for Sabah.

I think we can leave this airport upgrading for now , and we need to show them our vote !!

Some old news in relation to POIC Sandakan....

Quote:
POIC SANDAKAN TO OFFER UP TO 25,000 JOB OPPORTUNITIES IN 2014
KOTA KINABALU, May 7 (Bernama) -- The Palm Oil Industrial Cluster(POIC)

Sandakan will offer up to 25,000 job opportunities to locals when it becomes

fully operational in 2014.

POIC Sandakan chairman Datuk Bernard Maraat said infrastructure construction

work in the area, especially on the access road to the site, is now being

actively implemented and is expected to be fully completed by early 2013.

"To date, the infrastructure construction has reached 80 per cent with the

rest being technical and electronics work," he told reporters after the opening

of the 8th Annual General Meeting of former Members of Parliament and State

Assemblymen (Mubarak) here today.

The meeting was officiated by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman.

Bernard, who is also the former Pensiangan Member of Parliament, said when

the POIC Sandakan is fully operational, it will attract more investors from both

within and outside the country.

"To date, there are five investors keen on purchasing lots in the area and

expect more to do so in it, in view of the price of land not being that

expensive compared to the urban areas," he added.

The POIC is an integrated industrial park that will host related palm oil

downstream activities in one cluster.

The project is also a strategic initiative of the state government to

further boost the palm oil industry in Sabah by creating investment

opportunities in downstream activities.-- BERNAMA

Sandakan Airport Upgrade

Some news regarding the airport upgrade after some years of silence. Again, our MP has just missed the point - more airlines or new routes to Sandakan will attract more people to visit, NOT a new airport. People do not come to visit just because we got a new airport. Going thru an airport is in fact a hassle to many travellers.

MP calls for upgrade of Sandakan airport
by Winnie Kasmir. Posted on November 10, 2011, Thursday

SANDAKAN: Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Liew Vui Keong said Sandakan should have a distinctive airport of international standing in order to attract more foreign tourists.

Describing Sandakan as a destination offering diversity in eco-tourism, he said based on the number of aircraft movements and the increasing number of passengers from year to year, it was appropriate for the airport to be upgraded and the flight frequencies increased in order to make it competitive with other airports in the country.

“Upgrading the airport is in line with the government’s aspiration to make Malaysia a premier tourist destination in Southeast Asia.

“The Ministry of Tourism targets the revenue earned from tourism be about RM161 billion with an influx of 36 million tourists by 2020,” he said.

Liew, who is also Sandakan member of paliament, added by upgrading it into an international airport, the district would be able to attract investors.

He said that when declaring open the 12th Sandakan Festival held at the lobby of the Sandakan airport yesterday.

The two-day festival which started yesterday, is an affirmation of welcome for tourists to visit Sandakan which is known for its natural environment and tropical rainforest.

Various events and activities have been planned to attract the people to come and visit the Sandakan airport.

“We must treat this airport not only as a point of arrival and departure but also to visit the outlets which offer products to suit the tourists’ tastes,” Liew added.

He stressed that in order to turn Sandakan into a district that can generate its own economy, particularly for the local communities, the high-end tourist markets should be tapped and given attention to, especially in Europe, the Middle East, China, Korea and Japan.

He called on the operators and agencies based at the airport to continue providing courteous and quality service to protect the image of the country and that of the district.

Also present were Sandakan Municipal Council president Datuk Ir James Wong and Malaysia Airport Berhad Sandakan manager Awang Mali Awang Anak.

I think a "founded by Sandakanites" property magazine - "Sabah Homebuyer Magazine" launched and reveals many Sandakan & Sabah properties updates.

Here u go an external link for that magazine:

I notice a 4 stars Sri Malaysia Hotel was planned at BDC site. Do not know what the status now?

You can also see a rendering of proposed new Sandakan Airport (if this happen) and present Sandakan Property Development Plan.

Total investments in Sandakan Palm Oil Industrial Cluster hits RM200m
Written by Bernama
Monday, 21 November 2011 15:44

KOTA KINABALU (Nov 21): Total investments in the Sandakan Palm Oil Industrial Cluster (POIC) have hit RM200 million, State Minister for Industrial Development Datuk Raymond Tan Shu Kiah told the state assembly on Monday.

He said the cumulative investment was received from six domestic investors, one of whom had signed the sale and purchase agreement, while the others are negotiating the terms and conditions and preparing sale and purchase documents.

"The type of investments fulfilled the target under the POIC concept like building a palm oil mill, packaging factory, power plant, warehouse and a logistics hub owned by a company which exports palm oil to China.

"Sawit Kinabalu Sdn Bhd will also build a logistics service centre and a centralised bulking installation for Sandakan POIC to facilitate palm oil import and export," he said when replying to Datuk Saddi Abdul Rahman (BN-Sukau) during question-and-answer session.

Tan said RM323 million has been channelled so far to finance Sandakan POIC's first phase construction.

He expects investment figures to rise further when marketing strategies go full swing after the first phase is completed next year. - Bernama

Green attraction: An artist’s impression of the proposed environmental
education activity centre at the Rainforest Discovery Centre that is
currently under construction.

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah's award-winning Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC) in Sandakan is set to become better next year with additional facilities, including an environmental education activity centre.

The RM6.5mil upgrading of the Sabah Forestry Department-run RDC would also include an 80m extension of its existing 147m-long treetop walkway.

Department director Datuk Sam Manna said an outdoor stage and the facility's car park would be upgraded.

“These new developments will further enhance the standing of the RDC as a top environmental education facility in Sabah,” he said yesterday, adding that work would be completed next November.

Mannan said funding for the work was provided by grants from the federal Tourism Ministry and the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry.

Located some 24km from San-dakan town, the RDC is located adjacent to the internationally renowned Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre.

The RDC, with its 800m trail among dipterocarp trees, is also the venue of Sabah's annual bird-watching festival.

Among the recent additions to the RDC was a new 120-seat theatre early this year.

The RDC was named the state's best tourist attraction in the nature category at last week's Sabah Tourism Awards event.

Opened in 2007, the RDC attracted some 40,000 visitors last year, Mannan said.

He also said the department had commissioned the building of a jungle lodge along the Kawag River in the Ulu Segama Forest Reserve, an area known for its rich wildlife.

He said the contractor had taken possession of the site and was expected to begin work on the lodge before the end of the month.

“We hope the proposed new facility will create more opportunities for forest recreation and tourism in the Lahad Datu area,” he said.
