Kekurangan Hotel Di Sabah Akan Diatasi - Tengku Adnan

Tourism Ministry working hard to get tourists to stay longer in Sabah
9th July, 2007

SANDAKAN: The Tourism Ministry is working hard to get tourists to stay longer in Sabah, especially in the east-coast towns like Sandakan.
Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said the abundance of potential tourism products in areas such as Sandakan and Tawau would be developed for the purpose.

The ministry would meet hotel operators, tour agencies and tourist guides to discuss the matter, he told reporters after opening the Sandakan Harbour Square International Hotel and Shopping Complex here Saturday night.

He said the hotel would help ease the shortage of rooms in Sandakan, which had resulted in many foreign tourists flying from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan and back within a day when visiting the Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre in Sepilok near Sandakan.
Adnan said another reason for developing tourism products in other areas of Sabah is to disperse tourists away from room-starved Kota Kinabalu which faced a shortage of 3,000 hotel rooms during peak tourist seasons.

He said that officials from his ministry would meet with the local authorities to explore what tourist attractions there are in each district and to find what problems they face.

While launching the Sandakan Music Fiesta, Adnan remarked that it showed the creativity of the Sandakan folk and that it could also attract more tourists.

Also present at the function was Sabah Tourism Minister, Datuk Masidi Manjun, Sandakan Municipal Council president, Yeo Boon Hai and ICSB Ventures Sdn Bhd managing director, Lai Voon Hon.

Yesterday in Kota Kinabalu, Tengku Adnan said the ministry would also look into the problems faced by tourist guides in Sabah with regard to some restriction on the area of operation.

“For example, those registered as nature guides cannot guide tourists to islands or towns. They can only guide tourists to mountains or forests, and vice-versa.

“Furthermore, there are tourist guides who cannot communicate in the Korean or Japanese languages and we will look into this,” he said.

Opening of the Hotel & Mall? I reckon they are referring to the ground breaking ceremony perhaps? Any photos of the above event? Thanks.
