VIENNA - 2nd District (Leopoldstadt)

This is my newest picture project.
Lots of people know the sights in Vienna's Inner City yet don't know that there are actually 23 districts in my city.
I am going to portray each and every of the districts in this series to make you familiar with the Real World Vienna.

LEOPOLDSTADT - 2nd district

Area: 19,27 km˛
Pop.: 90.000
Leopoldstadt is one of the most diverse districts, with the huge forest/greenery areas of the Augarten in the north and the Prater in the south, occupying about half of the district's area and the very dense area in the north.

Gaußplatz, between the 20th and the 2nd district:

Augarten park, in the very north:
The famous Augarten porcelain factory:

One of the three WWII flak towers in the Augarten:

Typical 60s architecture:

The 2nd district is still one of the districts with one of the highest number of jewish citizens:

Karmelitermarkt (market):

Karmeliter church:

The characteristic profile of Vienna's tramways:

Praterstern - Wien Nord train station, very important next year for the EURO:

The Praterstern square itself:

The famous ferris wheel in the Prater amusement park, which only makes up for a small part of the prater area itself. The rest is a huge park with forests, waterways and meadows.

The Prater Hauptallee, an avenue of 4.5 km.

The redesigned convention center, which is going to serve as the main media center during EURO2008:

Ernst-Happel-Stadion:

The yet to be finished metro station and shopping mall nearby:

Only a few hundred meters away:

Even out here in the woods, PT has sensible intervals:

The Lusthaus at the southern end of the Prater:

Hello...!

By the Danube:

The Leopoldstadt waterfront:

An S-bahn train disappearing across the Danube, in the 22nd district:

Two generations:

The Ferry-Dusika-Velodrome:

Along the riverside:

The passenger harbor:

My favorite church in Vienna, St.Francis of Assisi at Mexikoplatz:

By the Danube channel, sorry for the dust spots:

Comments welcome.
And remember: This has only been the first part of 23!

I love this ****, so green, so historic, one of my favorites indeed. And so close from Athens, just a 1:15 hours flight or you can take the train there and enjoy the landscapes.

Heyy - Nice pictures David! That´s where I live. Oy yeah, in the zweiter Bezirk

Btw, did you check out the synagogue at Grosse Schiffgasse? There are always some police men stationed there (sometimes in an old telephone booth), but the kosher shops around the corner in Karmelitermarkt seems to do just fine without the police. There shouldn´t be any need for police attention no more.

and Btw, OPEC has its HQ there in a rather dull and unimpressive building for being one of the most powerful organisations in the world. Could hardly believe my eyes when I first saw it. Just three stories tall, boxy concrete and looks like a prison.

and BTW, I really appreciate the late night cafés in this Bezirk with human prices on the beer

You are right with the OPEC headquarters. But have a look at the OPEC foundation building. That one does a far better representative job in fact.
I mean it easily can do so, as it is a Ringstraßen Palais...

PS:
I thought about getting a new digital camera in Vienna, but when you are continuing this job I think I won't have any necessity for that anymore

I really love how you catch the everyday life in your pictures! Leopoldstadt is really a nice place, i love the multicultural flair. Plus it's the only place where I can get one of my favourite beers: Goldstar. So drop by in the Koscherland or another kosher store some time and try it, it's worth it

On my last night in Vienna before returning home, I decided not to stay at a hostel because my train left at 6:30am, and I knew there was no chance of being up that early, so I walked around the city all night until it was time to catch my train. I ended up strolling down the Hauptallee at 2:30 in the morning .. it was foggy and I was the only person around - so surreal. I wish I had taken pictures.

Cool, I have not seen the Hauptallee without people so far
