ST. JAMES' PARK - for NUFC-related "Off the field", "Stadium" and "Historical" issues - Page 2

Despite my natural dislike for Newcastle (being from Sunderland myself) - I can't find any reason to fault these plans. Basically, someone else finances all the building development, and as a by-product, the clubs gets an extra 7 or 8000 seats for next to nothing.

I can't see them expanding the fourth side of the ground though, either upwards with executive boxes or in any other way. I don't think there is enough money in that particular expansion to justify the expense.

And to those who believe Newcastle are at their highest point in history - I remind you that pre-1969, they actually used to win the occasional trophy, including the league on a few occasions.

Well considering they mentioned about the expansion only once and that was over a year ago, they certainly are not rushing into it. I think that if Newcastle can start to seriously push for top 6 place next season (they finished 12 in 07/08 season) then there might be talk of getting back into the top 4. However there are so many clubs now in a the same position as Newcastle vying for those places, Villa, Everton, Blackburn, Portsmouth and Tottenham that its going to be very tough. If Newcastle can start to repeat what they did in the mid 1990's then there might be talk again of expansion of St James Park.

the reason the plan has been shelved is down to the change in ownership.

The small side of SJP is unlikely to expanded much as the building it is right up against (Leaze's parade?) is a listed building.

Why would Newcastle want to try to compete?

Attendance was 47,500 last week, not sure any justification for expansion when the future looks gloomy at best to really compete in the league.

Let's not forget that only 3 teams will be in Champs league if Platini gets his way.

I think steady the ship is a good policy for a lot of clubs at the moment?

Back when I was a kid living in Newcastle, I decided that I wanted to support Sunderland and all I can really remember from that day is my mother screaming at me, telling me to stop being stupid.

It sure is a clever way to expand St. James, which is already enormous. It's great walking through Newcastle and catching glimpses of the huge stands overlooking the city centre.

It was the colours wasn't it? I mean, we've got colours on Wearside, whereas all they've got in Newcastle is black and white. On the other hand, I believe the license is cheaper up there.

I've never been a fan of the look of St James' Park. It will look even more unbalanced if they expand it.
It would look like a poor version of Celtic Park if you ask me.

City's fans have never deserted the club unlike:

Newcastle
Leeds
Aston Villa

With the cash I think they will be the second biggest club in the land.

Re Liverpool....I missed them off because I think they have structural issues which will sadly see there eventual fall from power.... no chance of a new stadium so they cannot compete with United/Arsenal and they have no cash to compete with City/Chelsea....as soon as champions league football disappears the decline will be scary.

Shame, because they are better than the muppets at Chelsea by a long chalk.

You gotta be joking? These are the best stadiums IMHO.
It's called character, something the likes of Wembley, Emirates etc will never be able to compete with.

Those slagging off the way SJP looks need to get a grip.

The two 'small' sides are not exactly THAT small. The east stand is quite small becasue of the listed buildings behind it but the Gallowgate end (behind the goal) is as big as the Kop at Liverpool.

The stadium has character which is more than can be said for a huge majority of stadiums these days.
