It really does the city proud and should England ever get the world cup or the Euros again, then I'm sure the stadium will be chosen.

Have you seen these posts, from earlier in this thread and from the "Newcastle as it Might Have Been" thread?

Just checking them now, but I will say the new stadium is vastly better. However, the floodlights from 1970 look really good.

Commercially quite smart but on a purely personal level not an outfit I would want anything to do with.

Yes it was quite the thing when it was first installed - high tech!

Here is a wider view - a picture I have just called "The Lonely Goalie"

A few years later, and the "Scottish and Newcastle United Scoreboard" had been replaced with an updated "NEI Scoreboard".

These two photos were taken at our end of season match (7-1 v Leicester) in the 1992/1993 Season, by 'Newcastle Online' poster johnson293 . . .

Ex-Newcastle United chief exec Freddie Fletcher dies
by Kate Proctor, Evening Chronicle, August 28th 2012

FORMER Newcastle United chief executive Freddie Fletcher has died following a brave battle with cancer. Despite gruelling chemotherapy treatment, the Scottish born tycoon continued with his public appearances and charity work until the start of the summer. He passed away last night from asbestos-related cancer which he was diagnosed with in January.

The 71-year-old, of Darras Hall, is credited with transforming the fortunes of the football club during the early 1990s and appointing manager Kevin Keegan. Financial difficulties threatened to put St James’ Park into administration but, along with former club chairman Sir John Hall, Freddie helped with the acquisition and was made chief executive in January 1992.

In his years at the helm, he helped turn around the club’s financial situation and helped bring Kevin Keegan back to Tyneside.

Sir John Hall, who worked with Freddie for 26 years, said: "He was instrumental to the success of Newcastle United. It's sad to think we have lost a truly great friend. What he did behind the scenes was invaluable. My condolences go to his wife Margaret and family." Malcolm Dix, honorary vice president of Newcastle United, said: "I was part of the Magpie Group that brought Freddie to Newcastle United and we had a marvellous team with Sir John Hall and Kevin Keegan. That was one of the best eras for the club in living memory."

Great player and one that the modern day footballers would do to model - 100% effort and such a down to earth bloke.

God that brings back memories, I was at that match as a kid

I can remember when my dad fist starting taking me to matches the NEI was there and for the first few games I couldn't figure out why every team we played was called "visitors"

Mind you I was only about 7/8

It made me laugh the article saying a player had been signed for £ 30,000 in 1971. Of course, these were the days when admittance was 40 pence, a pint was 11 pence and you could probably get totally hammered, watch the match, go for a meal and get a taxi to the coast for well under a fiver.
Nowadays even near me a lower league team like Carlisle charges £ 22.

Yes, money these days is a 'joke', beyond a joke really!

Particularly in football, from admission prices to transfer fees, you get used to the high figures, but it all just seems "without real value" at times.

Going back to 1971, the £30,000 fee was VERY low, for those days. That's why Terry was such a bargain.

It had actually been a couple of years before then (in 1969) when we had bought our first "£100,000 footballer" (£100,000 was the sort of 'quality yardstick' at that time) in Jimmy Smith.

Another great player, "Jinky".

Jinky Jimmy Smith lived in Dudley. used to catch the bus up to Seaton Burn and ask to be dropped off at the corner as it was nearer the club!

I once asked him for his views on Newcastle, he said he was not really interested and had not been back to St. James' Park since he finished.

Brilliant player in his time.
