Project Introduction
The project is being developed on a Public Private Partnership model like the Mumbai Metro. It is being spearheaded by Larsen & Toubro which emerged as the lowest bidder for the project viability gap funding in July 2010. They sought just 12% (Rs 1,458 crore) of the Rs. 12,132 crore cost of the project from the government.

Phase I of the project includes 3 lines covering a distance of 71.16 km with 66 stations. Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) and L&T Hyderabad Metro Rail (L&THMR) have sealed a six stage schedule of construction for the elevated rail system to be built.

The Stage I (Nagole - Mettuguda) covering about 8 km is likely to be operational by 2015.

MRTS routes await approval

HYDERABAD: All the three proposed routes of Hyderabad Metro's phase one for a distance of 66.39 km now await the Government's approval after they have been more or less finalised by the Empowered Committee of senior officials.

While there is no route change for line one - Miyapur to L.B.Nagar (29.8 km & 27 stations) and line two - Jubilee Bus Station to Falaknuma (14.78 km & 16 stations), a major change has already been made for line three - Habsiguda-Shilparamam (21.74 km & 20 stations).

Line one route :Line one will traverse through JNTU, KPHB Colony, Kukatpally, Balanagar, Moosapet, Bharatnagar, Erragadda, ESI Hospital, S.R.Nagar, Ameerpet, Punjagutta, Erramanzil, Khairatabad, Secretariat, Ravindra Bharathi, Assembly, Gandhi Bhavan, M.J. Market, Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station, Malakpet, Moosarambagh, Dilsukhnagar and L.B.Nagar.

Line two will traverse through Parade Grounds, Secunderabad station, Ramnagar, Chikkadpally, Narayanaguda, Sultan Bazar, Osmania Medical College, Salar Jung Museum, Charminar, Shalibanda, Shamsheergunj, Jangamet and Falaknuma. The line will be laid at least half a kilometre away from historic sites like Charminar and Museum, said Project Director N.V.S. Reddy.

Bus terminals: All three routes will touch major bus terminals located in four corners like the Jubilee Bus Station, Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station at Imlibun, Dilsukhnagar Bus Station, Miyapur Bus Station and Charminar Bus Station.

Line three starting from Habsiguda has been altered to pass through Begumpet, Ameerpet, Madhuranagar, Yousufguda and Jubilee Hills instead of the Punjagutta-Banjara Hills-Jubilee Hills route due to steep curvature of 70 metres radius at the Rajiv Gandhi statue.

Interchange stations with the railways will be at Nampally, Secunderabad and Begumpet. For Metro, line one and line two will have an interchange station at Osmania Medical College in Koti, line 1 and line 3 interchange station will be at Ameerpet and for line 2 and line 3 at Parade Grounds. Interchange stations for MRTS with existing MMTS network will be at Bharatnagar, Begumpet, Khairatabad, Malakpet and Falaknuma. Railway lines will be crossed over at Alugadda Bavi, Hotel Ramakrishna, Old Gandhi Hospital, Begumpet, Malakpet, Khairatabad and Bharatnagar. Work may be grounded in a few months.

Routes:
The first phase of the project would cover the most congested routes and would be completed in four years. They include

Miyapur-Punjagutta-MJ Market-Chaitanyapuri-LB Nagar stretch ========= (29.87 km, 27 stations);
Jubilee Bus Station-Secunderabad Railway Station-Sultan Bazaar-Falaknuma (14.78 km, 16 stations)
Osmania University (Habsiguda)-Tarnaka-Begumpet-Yusufguda-Shilparamam (21.74 km, 20 stations).

All the 63 stations, which have gaps of 1 km each, would be well connected with feeder bus services...

GoI approval obtained in March 2007, The bid documents will be issued to the five pre-qualified consortia:

1. Essar Constructions, SREI (Kolkata), Singapore MRT, SEC and STE of Singapore;
2. Magna Allmore (Malaysia), Siemens (Germany), Emirates Trading Agency (Dubai) and Nagarjuna Constructions;
3. Reliance Energy and Bombardier (Canada);
4. GVK, Gammon, Alstom (France) and IDFC; and
5. Navabharat, Maytas, ItalThai (Thailand) and IL&FS.

ROUTE ALIGNMENT

The Miyapur - Chaitanyapuri corridor starts from Miyapur on NH 9. The station is planned in "off road'" location to provide terminal station. Connection to the Depot on further north is provided from this station. The proposed alignment continues on NH9 towards south and passes through JNTU college, Kukutpally housing board colony and Kukutpally. The alignment passes through the BalaNagar industrial area and reaches Bharat Nagar flyover where it moves on the west side of the flyover to provide integration with MMTS station at Bharat Nagar.

After crossing the SCRly tracks the alignment returns to the central verge of the NH9 after the flyover and continues towards Kairtabad via ErraGadda, ESI hospital, SanjivaReddy Nagar, Ameerpet, PunjaGutta and Erramanzil. All the areas are commercially developed and have residential colonies nearby.

At Khairtabad integration with MMTS and road based traffic is provided. The alignment moves through the low lying area to avoid Visveswaraya flyover and passes in front of NTR Gardens alongside the Hussain Sagar. A station is provided at Secretriate to serve all the above recreation areas as well as the secretriate. The alignment moves towards assembly via public gardens. An important station is proposed at assembly which will serve Public Gardens, Assembly and Stadium nearby. From here the corridor touches the Nampally station, Gandhi Bhawan, M J Market and reaches Osmania Medical college. The Metro Office is proposed near Gandhi Bhawan while interchange with the second corridor is planned at Osmania Medical College with the two staions provided one above another. The alignment touches Emliban Bus Stand and reaches Malakpet where again integration with MMTS is provided. From Malakpet the alignment passes through New Market, T V Tower and Dilsukh Nagar Bus Stand before reaching the terminal station at Chaitnya Nagar. Provision has been kept for extending this line at both ends in future though the extension towards L B Nagar may be required in Phase II.

The 25.6 km long elevated corridor has 25 stations. The right of way along most of the length is sufficient to provide elevated corridor.

The second corridor is planned from Secunderabad to Falaknuma via CharMinar. The corridor is planned as elevated corridor for entire length due to planning by the state government for widening the roads along the corridor for most of the areas.

The terminal station is provided across the platforms of Secunderabad station and the alignment reaches median of the Boyiguda road after crossing the railway's coaching yard. On Boyiguda road it passes in front of newly constructed Gandhi Hospital and continues via ChikadPalli Road and NarayanGuda Road. The alignment passes over Narayan Guda drain by the side of road bridge and crosses NaryanGuda flyover as double elevated. The alignment crosses the road to Kacheguda station and goes through Sultan Bazar and Koti road before reaching Osmania medical college where it goes above the first corridor. A link line is provided for rake interchange between the two corridors at this station.

The alignment continues through heavily built up area and passes adjacent to MG Bus stand and crosses Musi River and joins Purani Haveli road near Salarjung Museum. This road is being widened by the state government as part of pedestrainisation project in CharMinar area. The alignment continues on Purani Haveli road with a station near CharMinar and turns to join Sardar Patel Road after CharMinar. It continues on Sardar Patel Road to Falak Numa via ShaliBanda, ShamsherGanj and Janganmetta. All these areas are part of the old city and are densely populated.

The corridor is 12.6 km long and is having 14 stations. A small depot is located at FalakNuma for stabling, inspection and minor repairs.

Road widening is necessary in Sultan Bazar area and the stretch between Medical College - Musi River along with few locations in Narayanguda area and on Sardar Patel Road.

MRTS likely to have improved features
...The single class stainless steel coaches are to be lightweight with an axle load of 15 tonnes, against 18 tonnes for DMRC, which will in turn make the supporting structures lighter and occupy less space. The power traction 750 volts systems will be on the bottom rails rather than overhead giving a better look. It was also decided not leave any space between the coaches and the platforms with barricading up to four and six feet.

...the three/six coach trains with scheduled speed of 34 kmph and maximum speed of 80 kmph.

Platform barricading will ensure that none will have access to the rails and the gates will open only when the train stops and the automatic doors open. The ballast-less and joint-less rails will reduce noise besides providing better riding comfort.

Integration of routes and different systems of transport are being planned at Ameerpet, Secunderabad and Osmania Medical College stations and they will remain with the Government for better interchange facilities.

The Andhra Pradesh Cabinet today approved ''Hyderabad Metro Rail Project'' at the cost of Rs 8,760 crores and formation of a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) ''Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited'' (HMRL) to coordinate and monitor the speedy implementation of the project.

All the stations would be connected with bus services and the terminals and junctions would be connected with Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS).

Mr Shabbir said the work would begin from June 2007.

The stations would have modern passenger facilites like escalators and elevators. Coaches would be air-conditioned with automatic door closing system and most modern safety features...

MRTS project cost scaled down

HYDERABAD: The Government has scaled down the total project cost of Hyderabad Metro Rail Project by Rs. 278 crores from the proposed Rs. 8,760 crores. The elevated mass rapid transit system (MRTS) will now cost Rs. 8,482 crores. The revised cost was arrived at after the Central Government's Empowered Institution (EI), a high powered body consisting of senior officials drawn from the departments of Economic Affairs, Expenditure and Urban Development, wanted the private land acquisition be kept out of project cost. Of the 265 acres of land required, the Government has agreed to give 212 acres free while 43 acres of private land was to be acquired at a cost of Rs. 43 crores.
The EI, which vets all public-private partnership projects above Rs. 500 crores, is studying the technical reports and financial model sent by the Government. It has also asked the Government to issue technical bid papers first to the five build, operate and transfer (BOT) international-national consortia in fray and later, the financial bid documents.

A careful study of the Hyderabad Metro Rail project plan was necessitated since it was the biggest PPP project of the country. And no country is said have attempted to build 66 kilometres of metro rail in a single go as is being attempted here, according to Project Director N.V.S. Reddy. The revised memorandum submitted to the EI contains detailed reports of the latest traffic studies, justification for the system, alternatives if any, besides technical issues, fare structure, etc.

Twin tracks: With average cost of Rs.132 crores per km, the metro will have twin tracks (up and down lines) on concrete beams built mostly on road median on three routes of (Line 1) - Miyapur to L.B. Nagar, (L2) Jubilee Bus Station to Falaknuma and (Line 3) - Habsiguda to Madhapur with 63 stations at an average interval of 1-km each.

Project authorities expect Centre's clearance within a few days, including the nod for viability gap funding (VGF), where the Centre and the State are to share the 40 per cent of revised project cost put at Rs. 3,277 crores. The selected BOT developer will bear the remaining cost.

Metro rail project: special purpose vehicle approved

HYDERABAD: The proposed elevated metro rail for the capital reached a significant milestone with the Government approving the formation of a special purpose vehicle (SPV) - Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) Limited to implement the project. The Government has also appointed Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department Principal Secretary S.P. Singh as Chairman and Multi-Mode Transit Service (MMTS) Project Director N.V.S. Reddy as the Managing Director for HMR.

Other members are: Principal Secretary (Finance) N. Ramesh Kumar, Principal Secretary (Transport) Tishya Chaterjee, Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board MD K.S. Jawahar Reddy, Andhra Pradesh Central Power Distribution Company Limited MD G. Sai Prasad, Hyderabad Urban Development Authority VC Jayesh Ranjan.

The SPV has an authorised capital of Rs. 100 crores and the MD designate N.V.S. Reddy has been asked to immediately get the company registered. The MA & UD Department will work out the share capital to be subscribed taking into account the funds already released and available for the project.

The objectives: HMR would help in land identification, land acquisition and shifting of utilities like telephone, power, sewer and drinking water lines. It would help in timely implementation of the project as per the approved technical specifications, performance criteria and very high safety standards.

HMR's other objectives indicated in the Government order are to provide for feeder service network, commercially exploit land, air space and other resources, undertake transit oriented developmental activities, etc...

HMR to become landowner for 266 acres

HYDERABAD: Hyderabad Metro Rail, the newly formed special purpose vehicle to supervise the project, will become the landowner for the 266 acres -- 223 acres belonging to the Government and the rest of 43 acres in private hands -- required for the project.

The Government will be transferring land ownership to HMR, which in turn would lease the land to the private BOT developer for a period of 35 years including five years for constructing the project, said MD designate N.V.S. Reddy. "At the end of the 35-year term the land will revert back to the Government which means the BOT developer can utilise the land for development, but not sell...

Three major depots for maintenance and rolling stock are to be built at Miyapur - 99 acres, Habsiguda-77 acres and Falaknuma - 17 acres.

About Rs. 261 crores earmarked to acquire 43 acres of private property has been left out of the project cost bringing it down to Rs. 8,482 crores from Rs. 8,760 crores already.

HMR expects the Central and State Governments to pitch in about Rs. 3,277 crores as Viability Gap Funding (VGF) of 40 per cent from the total projected cost of Rs. 8,482 crores...

i think there is a proposal. but not sure which stage of planning it is at. GMR has supposedly told the state govt that they should plan for metro connectivity to HIAL.

HYDERABAD: Three years from now, about 16 lakh commuters are likely to travel by metro trains. Recent studies have revealed that the LB Nagar-Miyapur route is likely to witness the highest number of commuters (7.8 lakh) on the trains per day.

The fresh studies were commissioned by the traffic and transportation wing of the MCH on the proposed three Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) routes. A consultant conducted the studies a month ago. The latest reports have been submitted to the empowered institution appointed by the Centre for project clearance.

As per the report, on an average, about 4.91 lakh passengers would take the Habsiguda-Shilparamam (Madhapur) route, 3.06 lakh the JBS-Falaknuma and about 7.8 lakh would use the metro services on the L B Nagar-Miyapur route.

The MCH had to conduct fresh studies after the Centre refused to accept the data of 2003, made by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), to clear the project...

there is def a lot demand for affordable transportation. auto transport has become really expensive. if you are covering long distances, then it's worth buying a Bajaj Eliminator (not sure if it's still around) and run it all over the place than use an auto. you'll break even in about an year.

Dude - Eliminator is passe. Avenger is the finest cruiser on the roads today
Auto transport should also pass into history with more connectivity to the metro such as feeder buses, BRTS etc. Beyond doubt Delhi will lead this transformation in the years to come....
