very nice one good location, retractable roof and pitch. Although having the pitch unprotected during a russian winter because there's a convention in the arena seems a bit ridiculous.

it looks bigger than the stated capacity, more like 80000 seats, i wonder whether it will sell out for many games

Judging from the grass bank surround (lower right pic), I'd say it was on the site of the current Communist-era Kirov Stadium, which is on the banks of the Neva.





This is the only picture I can find that was taken from outside the ground.



I think the big, grassy banks around the perimeter are the giveaway.

They did the same thing in Leipzig with the old Zentralstadion (which looked very similar), turning an old Eastern Bloc-style bowl site into a modern stadium. If you remember, Leipzig was one of last year's World Cup venues.
