1 Borneo Hypermall
Client : Sagajuta (Sabah) Sdn Bhd
Architect : YTS Architecture Sdn Bhd

When completed in 2008, the RM$1B 1 Borneo Hypermall will be the biggest shopping precinct on the island of Borneo. With 1.5M square feet of shopping, leisure and dining outlets, it will house 600 retail outlets across four floors. It will also contain a deluxe hotel, a specialist medical centre and a private college.

Set to attract local shoppers and foreign tourists, the 23ha site sits in close proximity to the Federal Administrative Centre, the ultra-modern University of Malaysia Sabah and the upcoming Alamesra township.

Arup has been commissioned to perform a safety assessment of the precinct. Using a combination of performance-based and prescriptive fire engineering, the team has ensured that its comprehensive strategy meets the Malaysian Uniform Building by-laws.

The team has increased leasable floor area by adopting a number of innovative solutions. By reducing the number of fire separations and introducing a comprehensive smoke control scheme, Arup has saved the client significant expense. These solutions will reduce initial construction costs and lessen long-term maintenance requirements.

Arup’s solutions have also enabled the architect to achieve a more flexible and innovative design, allowing them to create a concept that will appeal to the most discerning of customers.

EUROPEAN hotel-chain Accor is spreading its wings in Malaysia with the opening of four new hotels Grand Mercure Putrajaya, Novotel 1 Borneo Kota Kinabalu, Mercure Kota Kinabalu and Novotel Kuching. The first three are scheduled to open next year and Novotel Kuching in 2009.

With hotels like the Grand Mercure Putrajaya, we will strengthen our presence in the Malaysian market as well as support the governments efforts to develop tourism, says Gerard Guillouet, vice president for Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore.

The first five-star Grand Mercure hotel in Malaysia, it will offer 333 rooms and all facilities, including a ballroom with capacity for 1,000 people, a spa and high-tech business centre. It is located at the Federal Government Administration Centre near the Putrajaya Lake.

Both the Kota Kinabalu hotels will be part of 1 Borneo Shopping Centre, the new cultural heart of the city. In Sarawak, the Novotel Kuching will offer 391 rooms and standard hotel facilities like a ballroom. Share

Largest mall in Borneo opens
Monday June 9, 2008, TheStar

Shopping paradise: 1Borneo is the latest mall
to open in Kota Kinabalu Sunday.

KOTA KINABALU: The opening of Borneo’s largest hypermall, 1Borneo, has the potential to place Sabah among the top regional shopping destinations, Chief Minister Datuk Musa Aman said.

He said 1Borneo was an added attraction here for shoppers seeking bargains and branded goods and was part of the state’s efforts to diversify its tourism products, currently best known for its natural eco-tourism activities and destinations.

Calling for the tapping of shopping tourists who fly to regional centres like Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Singapore and Bangkok, Musa said it was important for the state to draw in these tourists, especially those living within three to six hours flying time of the city.

“We should keep striving to create new attractions and malls such as 1Borneo are one such product,” he said at the soft opening of the RM1.2bil hypermall, which was jointly developed by the state-owned Warisan Harta Sabah Sdn Bhd, Sagajuta (Sabah) Sdn Bhd and United Sabah Islamic Association, owner of the 10ha site.

The mall has 139,354 sq metres of shopping area, and among others, has four international chain hotels, condominiums, an Auto City, oceanarium and Discovery Centre, handicraft cultural centre and a cineplex among others.

The state was projected to increase tourism receipts from RM2.88bil in 2006 to a whopping RM48.5bil in 2025 through the initiatives outlined in the 18-year Sabah Development Corridor blueprint.

Musa also hoped that retailers opening shops in 1Borneo would employ local youths being trained in government and private colleges.
