The contest was won by the young spanish architect Federico Soriano, it was a surprise, because some other famous international architects presented their desingns. It was his first big project and since then he has become in one of the most renowned architects in Spain. He has just won another contest for building this skyscraper in Barcelona, called "Torre Laminar":

Nestled in the heart of historic downtown San Antonio along the banks of the world famous River Walk thrives the nucleus of our City’s convention industry. The Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center (HBGCC) plays host to more than 300 events each year with over 750,000 convention delegates from around the world.

The HBGCC once built as part of the 1968 HemisFair is but a memory as it has expanded into a beautifully decorated and spacious facility. The HBGCC spans an impressive 1.3 million square feet to include 59 meeting rooms, 3 beautiful ballrooms, 4 exhibit halls with a contiguous space of approximately 440,000 sq. ft. and 7 registration areas.

The HBGCC complex also features the Lila Cockrell Theatre, a 2,521-seat Performing Arts Theatre. The Alamodome and more than 9,600 of the City’s downtown hotel rooms (over 25,000 citywide) are within minutes and walking distance as well as restaurants and entertainment.

Come and see for yourself why readers of Meetings South Magazine recently voted the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention the “Best Convention Center in the Industry” two years in a row.

Click here for a biographical essay of Congressman Henry B. Gonzalez.

No and kinda yes....the San Antonio River does flow through downtown but in the picture its been "tamed" so that tourist can enjoy walks...access to bars and clubs...and a lot of hotels are built along the rivers edge to allow them easy acces. But north and south of the downtown area its a natural river that flows to the Gulf of Mexico.

Congress Center Hamburg (CCH)

- built 1973 it was Germany's first congress center
- 43 plenary halls/ rooms with alltogether 16.000 seats
- 12.000 m² exhibition area
- 108m high Hotel tower next to it (Radisson SAS Hotel)
- located directly at Dammtor train station with long distance train connections
- 5 minutes walk away from Hamburg's tradefair

3D model (without the current extensions):

Here with the new exhibition hall and new conference building in front:

IMO only the hotel tower is architectually appealing. The rest is boring or outright awful.

I forgot to mention the World Market Center in my list of Las Vegas convention centers.

http://www.lasvegasmarket.com/

Architect's page.

WMC caters exclusively to home furnishings trade shows.

Currently two buildings are open, a third is under construction and a total of seven when fully built out will provide up to 12 million square feet of floor space.

Building 1

Buildings 1 & 2 and building 3 under construction.

I went to a trade show last night on the top floor and got this shot of construction on building 3. Temporary buildings in the distance for more show space.

View looking up at 15 floors of escalators in the lobby of building 2.

Rendering of all seven buildings.

Puerto Rico Convention Center

Overlooking San Juan Bay, its an impressive building with an equally impressive setting...and centerpiece of an entirely new district of the city, exclusively built for this purpose, with parks, fountains, hotels, restaurants, retail, entertainment, and more.

Palau de congressos, in Valencia. Maybe it´s not as big as some of the ones in this thread, but it has some charm.

Madrid

This big building (more than 100 m high) will be the 3rd convention center in Madrid. We knew the competition's result just today.
