Burj Al Arab, Dubai,it's one of my favorite structures in the world, really cool.Close second the one in London and then Petronas Towers,to be honest i don't really like the other 2 skyscrapers..specially the Bank of China looks a bit messy in my eyes.

In terms of symbolism of power, Bank of China's legacy is far stronger than Petronas. Malaysia wanted the world's tallest buildings, and it was their oil firm that got the naming rights to the project. However, China wanted a huge landmark in colonial Hong Kong, with the feng shui to strike a knife down to the British governor's home. It was all very big political statement. Ironically, the architect, I. M. Pei, couldn't save his home from the bulldozers in Shanghai.

I'm surprised the Petronas Towers even made the final 5. They don't seem particularly futuristic to me.

Being in the top 5 obviously means it looks futuristic to many others

I personally think this kind of voting is very unfair. Look at who's voting for each -- and you will find that almost everyone votes for their own country's tower. I think the vote should be 70% conducted by SSC judges while 30% from general members.

My vote goes to Emirates Tower !

What makes Petronas futuristic other than it's architecture and steel is the symbolism.

The movie Entrapment gave Petronas the symbol of a millennium tower since the movie was set on the Millennium New Years Eve.

The symbolism goes back to Islam, which is historic, and not forward-looking, so it doesn't relate to futurism. The futurism is rather in the technology and engineering, especially the skybridge. A lot of effort was put in to make sure it doesn't snap when the winds sway the two buildings in different directions.

Yes The Petronas has some islamic influence in it's architecture. But it's islamic influence is fused to an ultra-modern skyscraper.

Incorporating historic religious elements into modern architecture isn't futuristic. In the end, it's still steel, concrete, and a whole lot of raw materials put together. How would you consider incorporating cultural context futuristic?

I don't think any of them are greatly futuristic. I'd say the Llyods Building in London is more inspired and dramatic in a futurist type of way. I'd also say for it's location, BOC competes with an array of very original buildings, many of which look just as 'futuristic' such as Lippo and HSBC.

Personally I think some of the more futuristic scrapers are to be found in China and most are not the tallest and most are certainly not well known.
