It's tendered today.

Our government has introduced a new road category, the R category, the "Gyorsút". Basically this means a 2x2 road with at-grade interchanges and no shoulders.

I have no idea what the R stands for though.

Those roads aren't common in Europe, while they are elsewhere (USA, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Russia, Turkey,...).

But why do Hungarian motorways have M prefix?

Perhaps M for Magyarország?

Britain does have loads of dual carriageways (2+2), which might have more grade separated interchanges but still lack the hard shoulder.

Yes, actually I am in favor of such roads. I dont like the R prefix though.

By the way, I just noticed that the M system is just about to be in complete order again, meaning a 2x2 (or more) laned road, since M2, M15, M70 are going to be widened soon.

Okay, you got me there. Except M19. They should rename it road 19 like it was before 2007.

So, the R-roads will not have interchanges with other roads but ordinary single-junction (on one level)?

M sign means that the motorway or expressway has only multi-level interchanges. R sign expressway can contain of single-junction, eg: roundabout or junction with traffic lights.

It really makes sense

M = multi-level interchanges
R = roundabouts or at-grade intersections
