THE SHORT HISTORY OF THE (EX-) M1 EXPRESSWAY

The M1 expressway is a special part of the Hungarian main road network because it was formally the first Hungarian expressway. The construction of the 49 km long new road started in 1958 and finished in 1960. The road built in line with the No. 80 Budapest-Győr second class main road. The function of the road was to connect Budapest with the new industrial city Tatabánya and originally it was not part of the Budapest-Wien route. Between 1961 and 1965 it was signed first class main road No. I.

In 1965 when the upgrade of the Tatabánya-Almásfüzitő road was finished it became the part of the Budapest-Wien route and got the number M1.

Between 1966 and 1977 it was formally signed expressway. Because of the lots of accidents from 1977 it is a first class main road again. In the meantime the M1 Tatabánya-Győr semi-motorway section was completed and the heavy traffic needed four lanes on the Budapest-Tatabánya route. There was two possibility: upgrade of the "old" M1 or a totally new motorway. The second version was achieved. The new motorway near the old road was finished in 1986, the old road was signed second class main road No. 100.

In 1999 all of the former "one digit" main road got back it's original number without "0" digit. The No. 100 became first class main road No.1 again. (Mistake of the map: the main road No.10 is first class too.)

Thanks, very much. Really appreciated, i love this history

I am doing a lot of historic reading about the Dutch roads from the 1960's until now at my work, were we have a collection of traffic engineering magazines dating back from 1963.

Hi. Interesting stuff. I am a little comfused though. You are saying that M1 can be considered the first Hungarian expressway. With 1958 it should be true, but I do not know about the parameters. And how about M7, 1964?

Interesting, thanks for the info. We also had some expressways that were later officially converted into ordinary roads (technically they didn't change).

Are there no plans for a motorway or expressway between Gyor, Veszprém and Lake Balaton? Or is the amount of traffic going to Balaton from the west not that big?

Hungary doesn't plan the direct connection from the M1 to the Lake Balaton, but wants to connect the motorways like

Check this: http://motorways-exitlists.com/europe/h/hungary.htm
Or this: http://roads.extra.hu/road_plans/mo_...34_fomterv.jpg

- M9 (Austria)-Sopron-Szombathely-Nagykanizsa(M7)
- M86 Levél (M15)-Csorna-Szombathely-(M9)
- M81 Komárom-Székesfehérvár

Believe it or not,10 times less foreigners go to Balaton, than to Budapest...and since the inauguration of the international airport at Sármellék,not many go there by car or bus. Though when M8 will be fully built, that section you've draw will be unavoidable to be built...

I hope we open all 75 km of the motorway to Hungary this year, so Budapest and Ljubljana are finally connected.

I think it's bad that there isn't a lot of emphasis on M9... a lot of traffic could be diverted from Budapest if it were built.

A lot of people traveling from Romania and Bulgaria go on the M5 to Budapest and then switch directions to the south for Italy & Spain. Of course, they could also use the Serbian autoput, but many choose not to because Serbia is not in the EU.

A southern east-west connection in Hungary would be very beneficial (even if 2x1 at the beginning).

That and the M15 not upgraded anytime soon would be my only objections... great job Hungary !

Some pics about the M0 northern bridge. The pylon close to the Pest side is ready, the pieces of the deck are being placed. The bridge on the Szentendre-island is ready too. The bridge over the Szentendre Danube-branch will be completed this march, and the bridge over the main branch(where the pylons are) in may.
