I think Hungary will be one of the richest mid-European nations in the future, because of it strategic position.

No, because of the function as a main hub. Transport always generate a lot of jobs and welfare, look at the Netherlands for instance. We surely weren't as rich as we are without our 2 mainports, Rotterdam and Schiphol airport. I think Hungary has a lot of potential, also because of its long living tourism industry of lake Balaton and Budapest. Especially when Romania and Bulgaria will develop to a modern economy, Hungary can handle a lot of freight traffic from the Black Sea region.

When Croatia and Serbia enter EU, they will take a lot of this traffic, as it was the case prior to the collapse of Yugoslavia.

And I've also been thinking... If strategic location is so important, then why is for example Iceland so rich? It lies in the middle of nowhere, with bad roads (logically). Estonia has also surpassed Portugal, for example (or they are close anyhow).

OMG, this is my 5,000th post.

You are right.
This "strategic position" is a extremly good opportunity.

And your are wrong.
We won't be rich.
We are too stupid to take advantage of this "strategic position".

We are arguing over how much harm the transit traffic causes and how to herd it away but we don't know that this is a huge economic potential.

We have 2 important TEN corridors (IV. and V.) that crosses each other at Budapest.

But instead of increasing the capacity of the very congested M0 south-bypass (or building a new alignment 10km southward) in the past 14 years we were lamenting over how to herd the drivers to public transport...

It's normal that more and more transit will go through Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria, especially when the latter two countries enter the Schengen area. Croatia will hopefully enter the EU in the near future (but who knows when will she become a Schengen zone member), but Serbia is uncertain, so the customs and administration can divert traffic to other countries like H, especially when there is an extensive motorway network. I don't know the motorway situation in RO and BG though. But in theory, in the future there should be enough transit for all those counries.

When will the M6 section from Budapest till Boly be finished? Will it then be connected to the Croatian A5 and are there any dates?

All the way from Dunaújváros until Pécs (so M6 and M60) HAS to be finished by 2010 march. Though from Bóly to the border...check the chart above...it says after 2015.

Bad, at least until Sofia. So this route can only attract trucks, which I hate overtaking all the time, so they can have them.
