Great news indeed! On our part the winners for the Lugoj-Timisoara-Arad A1 motorway will be anounced in June and hopefully the section from Arad to Nadlac will be awarded and built by 2012.

The winners of tender for the first 8,7 kilometers (including the Tisza bridge) are now chosen (Sadesa S.A., a Hídépítő és a Szeviép Zrt.). They offered to build the section for 26,7 billion HUF.
Works could start as early as this summer.

The winners of the other three sections leading up to Mako have also been announced and the good news is that work on all of the four sections will hopefully be finished by August 2010.

The tender for the section between Mako and Nagylak (23,1 km) is due to appear next year, The proposed deadline for that section is 2012.
Map of the future section...

The freeways (motorways) have always been indicated with "M", I think even in the '60-s, but definitely in the '70-s. Other roads only carry a number. Major roads 1 digit, less major ones 2 digit, minor ones 3 and 4 digit numbers. I just think that "M" originally comes from Magyarország.

I know just a few words of Hungarian, but I've read somewhere that M comes from "motorut", which should be something like motorway. That's also why in Czechs and Slovaks have D ("dalnice").

That would be a bit odd, I think... I never encountered any word for motorway other than Autópálya. Then again, I'm not Hungarian so I don't know.

Well, in Slovakia and Czech republic D is used for motorways only (dálnice in Czech and diaľnica in Slovak). In Hungary M is used for motorways, but also expressways, even with 2x1 lanes.

AFAIK, and please fellow Hungarians correct me if I'm wrong but, M commes from the old expression "Műút" which means the well built, wide, main road...

(We dont really use this expression anymore...)

But there is a strong possibility I'm wrong...

this could be really truth because M roads mostly run parallely with no-M roads withj the same number.

Thats the most plausible explanation...I couldnt find anything on the net concerning road designations...
