MALMO | Malmo Tower | 216m | 60 fl | Canceled

Finally the Malmö Tower, located in the new neighbourhood of Hyllie, close to the bridge and CPH, has been approved.
The initial proposed height for this building was 180 meters, ie. ten meters lower then the current tallest in Malmö (and Scandinavia) - Turning Torso. But both the architects and the developers wanted to make it taller and finally the municipality has approved it at 216 meters. This will make it the tallest building in Scandinavia and Northern Europe - as well as the tallest residential building in Europe (not counting Russia).
The tower will be standing right next to one of the stations on the new train tunnel line that will link the whole of central Malmö with several stations to the bridge to Copenhagen, making the journey between the two Scandinavian cities even shorter than todays 25-30 minutes. The travel time between Hyllie (Malmö Tower's location) and CPH airport will be 12 minutes.

The tower will also be located next to one of the largest malls in Scandinavia, as well as the largest event/icehockey arena in Sweden.

Basic facts:

Project name: Malmö Tower
Height: ~216 meters / ~709 feet (to roof) / ~60 storeys
Area: 60.000 sqm
Scheduled construction start: summer 2008
Scheduled completion: winter 2010-2011
Developer: Annehem AB - http://www.annehem.se/
Architect: CF Möller (Denmark) - http://www.cfmoller.dk/

That's great for Malmö! Far from the quality of the Turning Torso though, but I guess that's what you get for chosing Danish architects. But wow, I'm so jealous of you, Malmö (and I never thought I'd say that )

Good height, but i dont like the design so much. Maybe Swedish members can tell me.. why is Malmö home to those landmarks, and not Stockholm (for example)? Is an important place there?

It's a very high tower for a city as big as Malmö, it gives hope for other European cities to build high and high quality towers like this city.

The design isn't too spectacular, but that's because the only competition in town is the brilliant Turning Torso.

It's Sweden's third largest city (and part of the Själland-Skåne Megalopolis :P), so it's not in the middle of nowhere. But the reason is simply more pro-skyscraper politicians and fewer nimbys. Build anything over 6 storeys in Stockholm and some people freak out, very very tiresome attitude.

Being so close to Copenhagen probably doesn't hurt either.

Ekumenopolis,
Malmö simply is an extremely progressive city and by far the most booming city in Scandinavia right now. These towers are developed by local companies, so there has never been any question if they would be placed in Stockholm (or Copenhagen for that matter) or any other city.
It's like saying "why aren't these buildings built in Berlin instead?".

Many people were afraid that Malmö was going to be put even more in the shadow of Copenhagen when the bridge was finished in 2000, but the effect has been totally the opposite. Also, Malmö isn't really a small city with 0,6 million people in Greater Malmö, and the city together with Copenhagen forms the center of the Öresund Metropolitan Area with some 3,6 million inhabitants.
Malmö has gone from being a tired industrial city without any hopes for the future, in the 1980s, to the most progressive and booming city in northern Europe today.
The completion of the Turning Torso in 2005 was the icing on the cake, so to speak.

New tower in Malmo, it's very good news indeed, the authors wanted to make this tower the highest in EU and I hope they will

You Malmoians will do anything to get a clear view of Copenhagen won't you...

Congrets Malmö - hopefully this will respark the scraper debarte in CPH...

You can count on my visiting a lot when it's completed ( although I'm not too big a fan of the design )

What I really like about this skyscraper is the atriums on the sides.

Anyway... what's with the UFO in this picture...

Any renders of that?

Masridog,
A quick use of the ruler in Google Earth indicates that the distance between the two towers is around 6 km.

Sbz2ifc,
The UFO is actually an old watertower called Hyllie Vattentorn. It's around 60 meters tall and looks like this:
