I attended an expert lecture regarding cable-stayed bridges at CEPT about 15 days ago. They had invited the structural consultants of this bridge. They are hoping to open the bridge for traffic by June 2012.

The decision to make this bridge cable-stayed is purely for aesthetic purposes only. The govt was insistent upon a cable-stayed bridge when the thing could have been done by the normal method.

Kapil, any idea on this? Didn't know such thing was in development in India.

Got if from my Friend's Facebook:

Quote:
Solar panels atop Narmada Canal ,Gujarat.
The western Indian state of Gujarat is all set to become the first state in the country to generate solar power through panels mounted on a water body. Installation of panels on the canal will help in doing away with the need to acquire land. Evaporation of lakhs of litres of water will be prevented since the canal will be covered. And will generate clean energy. Generated solar power will be supplied to villages alongside the canal, which will lead to lower transmission losses and also helping to reduce the evaporation of water.
NAMO!

Those media person showing only injustice to Godhra Riots and says that Gujarat has not changed in last decade should see this thread and realize that in last decade Gujarat as developed in all the phases. Everybody has dark past but after every dark there is light. Godhra Incident is like dark past of Gujarat and every state has such past and much more than ours.

Every time when Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai or any other Indian city gets even a single new bridge then also national media shows it but when we got BRTS and won World's Best Sustainable Transport Award then also they are not interested. We have first or second riverfront in the country, best transport system in the world, best city in the country, pioneering renewable energy, have more efficient and effective innovative ideas than other states and much more but than also they cant see it. Media only see the slums of Ahmedabad and other areas in the state for reporting from Gujarat. They never shoot on the riverfront, near BRTS system, C.G Road, Kankaria or any other good location but they only selects the slums and says that all this is drama and government is making fool to the peoples on the name of development. Even local media don't report to the development projects.

And peoples think that media is doing justice

There is always a bad side and a good side to these. Bad side being that you get bad reputation in the limelight, good side being the local authorities will open their eyes. For eg. look at dharavi, before slumdog i doubt they (municipal corp) were going to develop that area or maybe they did but sometime later in the future. Just after the movie and all the media attention look what is happening now. Sometimes its good that someone points out your bad side so that you know what to fix even though it sounds rude.

About the riots I still believe that we have not changed personally and emotionally. People want to move on but cannot move on mostly due to all the media bothering them and also due to the vast differences that exist in Gujarat till today. Tell me one thing can a muslim person buy a house/appartment in a hindu dominated area. I know that in some cases they can but then there is this feeling among the neighbors that this man shouldnt be staying here. Why such feelings towards someone just cuz of their religion and its not just limited to people in gujarat, it applies to me too. Anyway i believe that this discussion might be good for the discussion thread instead of this thread!

I have a question might be rather stupid but would the cable remain stretched after the bridge is thrown open as in the pics? Wont the cables contract in winters and stretch in summers? Just wanna know how would the thing look after its ready.

Gujarat govt to give agri power connection in 57 ‘dark zone’ talukas

Quote:
In a major decision, the government of Gujarat today made an announcement to give agriculture power connections in 57 ‘dark zone’ talukas of the state.

This move has snatched away a major election issue from the pocket of opposition Congress party.

Minister Shri Nitinbhai Patel in his statement in Gujarat assembly under rule no. 44 said that the farmers of 57 talukas of the state will now be able to get agricultural power connection provided that they use drip irrigation system. He announced 60% subsidy (10% more compare to other areas) to dark zone areas for this cause. The govt will give 50,000 power connections to farmers in dark zone areas on priority basis.

Dark zones are “over exploited” and “critical blocks” in the state where level of ground water has significantly gone down due to uncontrolled lifting of ground water for agricultural use.

The Government had issued Resolution dated 19.9.2001, which states that the ground water levels are very low in certain areas. Therefore, Government has decided not to permit to draw water by tube wells in the interest of geo-hydrology as well as in the interest of public at large. The Government had also issued another Government Resolution dated 16.12.2003, in which it was decided that there are at least 57 Talukas declared as Dark Zone Area based on the assessment done by the Government. According to the said GR no electric connection should be given in these areas.

With today’s statement, the govt has canceled its year 2003 GR.

Over Exploited Blocks: Dascroi, Dholka-Distt. Ahmedabad, City-Deodar, Distt. Banaskantha, City-Dehgam, Gandhinagar, Kalol, Mansa Distt.-Gandhinagar, City-Mangrol, Distt.-Junagadh, City- Rapar, Bhachau, Mandvi Distt.-Kachchh, City –Becharaji, Kadi, Kheralu, Mahesana, Satlasana, Unjha, Vijapur, Visnagar Distt.-Mahesana, City- Chanasma, Patan Dishpur Distt.-Patan, City- Idar, Vadali Distt.-Sabarkantha, City-Vadodara, Distt.-Vadodara.

Critical Blocks: City-Derroj-Rampura, Distt. –Ahmedabad, City-Bhavnagar, Distt.- Bhavnagar, City- Manavadar, Vanthali, Distt.-Junagadh, City- Rapar, Distt.-Kachchh, City- Mehmdabad, Distt.-Kheda, City- Vadnagar, Distt.-Mahesana, City-Gondal, Distt. Rajkot, City-Modasa, Distt.-Sabarkantha.

Congress party’s reaction

Gujarat Congress President Shri Arjun Modhwadia reacting to state govt announcement on dark zone today said that 1 million agriculture power connections are pending, while the state govt has announced only 33,000 connections in dark zone areas that too with rider of making sprinkler, drip irrigation mandatory. In view of this, the govt decision is betrayal of farmers, Modhwadia said.
congress's reaction is funny. I guess they ran out of things to say.

Yes, they are fighting a losing battle in Gujarat. It is better for them to accept that they are not going to win anytime soon. Such feeble attempts are not going to bother Modi.

Friend, the cables are stretched and anchored at both its ends. Also maintenance team check the tension in cable wires in regular intervals to ensure that they remain stretched. It is the tension in the cables that is responsible for the strength of the bridge. As in case of Milau Bridge in France.

Nalco Gujarat Aluminium Refinery to be finalised in a month

Quote:
NALCO, the country's third largest aluminium producer, had emerged as the only qualified bidder and plans to set up only the refinery for now.

There have been several meetings between NALCO and Gujarat Mineral Development Corp(GMDC) to finalise the draft agreement for the refinery project.

"Once the agreement is finalized, we will proceed with the preparation of detailed project report and construction of the refinery," Bagra told Reuters on Tuesday.

NALCO will take four to five months for preparation of the feasibility report after the deal is finalised and another two to three months for financial closure.

NALCO aims to invest 40 billion rupees in the one-million-tonnes-per-annum refinery project. It hopes to start construction within 2012 and commence production by 2015-end.

The state-run producer is also open to a joint venture with the Gujarat government for the project, Bagra said.

"In case ultimately it becomes a joint venture NALCO will prefer to have a controlling stake," he added, without elaborating further.

He said NALCO will considering setting up a smelter only when it has access to captive coal blocks and electricity supply at economic rates.

NALCO, which currently operates a 2.1 million-tonnes-a-year alumina refinery in the eastern Indian state of Odisha, plans to expand the refinery by a million tonnes but is still awaiting allocation of bauxite deposits.

New bridge on Narmada near Bharuch

Bharuch: The work to build a new bridge near Sardar Bridge on National Highway 8 near Bharuch will begin from May 2012. The Rs 473 crore bridge will be ready over the next two years, senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel, political advisor to UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, said here on Saturday.
Commuters travelling between Surat and Vadodara by road have to cross Narmada river. Currently, there are two bridges — Golden and Sardar — that connect central and south Gujarat by road. Sardar Bridge is only open to heavy vehicles and Golden Bridge is meant for light ones. Yet traffic jam is a routine affair here.
Patel called a meeting of senior officials of NHAI and state roads and building (R&B) officials during his visit to Ankleshwar on Thursday.
