What should Britain do about Iran now?

Im not a war monger, and dont want to bomb or kill any Iranians ( I really dont!!!) and dont want to hear people say they do, but i really think something should be done seeing that the British sailors were obviously taken from Iraqi waters under a UN mandate. I know they already have sanctions, but this will only affect people who are least responsible for the abduction, so apart from a strongly worded letter, what do you think would be an appropriate response?

Sell them those sailor stories

Go into joint filmproductions.

Seriously though, Britain should do absolutely nothing.

I think they should be more focused on stopping Iran getting nuclear weapons. They have missiles that put London and New York in range, and frankly I don't really trust them.

I don't know why I don't trust them like, they seem like a LOVELY little regime.

Sneer at them intently.

Other then that nothing, if anything major is to happen to Iran it will have to come about through it's own people.

Storming in there would leave to mass deaths on both sides and provide fresh propoganda for Islamic extremists. We have to accept it is not our job to police other parts of the world all the time. Sometimes you have to sit back and see how things pan out in other places.

If it comes to a point where either Britain or an allie is in danger through Iranian actions then the question about what we should do about Iran can be answered.

Yeah, and the Revolutionary Guard should capture Blair and the Bishop of Canterbury.

And Michael Vaughn.

Ok but nightmare scenario, we remove them and Iran falls into civil war between those who support them and those who are against them and our soldiers. Yet another country we are bogged down in fighting extremists and the Middle East suddenly becomes a whole lot more unstable.

Anyone remember what happened to that US helicopter over Iran?

It crashed. The stronger we - vocally - oppose to Ahmadinejad, the greater his domestic stature.

Yes, I think if we leave alone in time the people of Iran will decide for themselves if he is good or bad for them.

We only need 1 guy with a mint shot and a long range rifle to take him out! One bullet is all it will take but that is called terrorism so we can't really do that!

Iran should join the EU, UEFA ānd the Eurosong Festival. We, the Netherlands will sell them so many tomatos and cucumbers that all they'll do all day long, is prepare salads. We, the Netherlands gave Pakistan nuclear secrets already, so logic has it, we ought to do the same with Iran.

We should bomb their nuclear facilities without further ado. I see no reason to invade the country outright but a strike against their nuclear sites should definitely be on the cards.

I found it interesting what Blair said in the press conference after the Naval personnel were released... something like 'we are more than willing to help Iran in the pursuit of nuclear technology for energy and medicinal usages'

Yeah and you really think that they after that will just sit there waiting to be invaded a decade later like Iraq did? Especially after loosing billions upon billions of dollars of equipment... They will drag the Middle East and Central Asia (Afghanistan) into the pits of hell. Not to mention the fact that they WILL use whatever nuclear technology or fuel they have remaining after a strike (as most definatly only some of the exposed sites will get destroyed) to build a whopping great a-bomb... North Korea ringing any bells?

I'm sure they have a replacement plastic head for Ayatollah Khaminei.. They had a replacement plastic hand for him when he lost it the last time they tried to assassinate him.

Anyway! Regarding the topic.. Nothing... no not nothing, perhaps raise the level of communication with the Iranian government to what it was during Khatami and Jack Straw's days... This will bring a pretty quick defuse to the situation.. End of the day the Iranian nuclear project has been on-going since 1974 and only hit the headlines since British-Iranian ties/communications diminished. Soon Ahmadinejad will be out of office and a reformist back in... Or atleast that is what the last elections a few months ago suggested.

Sending you and bore their arses off with your codswallop might prove more effective.

Pa'h!

All you gave us was cheap drugs, cigarettes and women, I feel cheated somewhat.

What's wrong with cheap women? Obviously expensive ones are probably better - but you can't be sure. Perhaps value for money women are best!

We should bomb their civilian planes when they fly over the Persian Gulf. Peacefully dealing with such incursions is just not civilised.

that is a very valid point. Iran had a very vocal middle/intellecutal-class who were very interested in liberalising the country, see the Iranian film industry for evidence. However ever since Bush has stigmatised and branded Iran as a part of the axis of evil this has just resulted in the same Iranian public siding with the hard liners. Doh

seriously though, we should lobby the US to release the Iranian diplomats they kidnapped from Irbil a few months ago. think that would be something that would improve relations.
