Cumberland House | Broad Street | Refurbishment | U/C

I thought I would create a thread as we will be getting some news soon.

As revealed last week, there is a Public Consultation & Exhibition in the Novotel on Broad St on Mon 16th April (4-7.30pm in the Darwin Suite) and Sat 21st April (10-12.30pm in the Burne Jones Suite) for the redevelopment of Cumberland House by Mopox Investments.

The site is pretty large, and someone said looks to be larger than the BST site. It takes in Oh Velvet!, Brannigans, the car park and Cumberland House Tower.

So we wait with anticipation! Anyone got any info on the developer etc?

Can anyone go to this exhibition or is it an invitation only event? In other words is one of us going to go?

Although we tend to talk about broad street, tennent street will see real change in the coming years with BST and potensially this.

Absolutely - they need to clear out some of the slummier and low-density housing, and maybe even vacate/demolish Trident House.

Blimey, that's a huge site!!!

I agree about the comments concerning Tennant Street, I've always considered it to be Broad Streets arsehole if that makes sense?

Bio, what is Trident House? Is it residential, office, mixed? We were discussing it on the Tower Block thread (rivetting, eh?) and we all kind of like it but have no idea as to its purpose?

The way things are going, I don't think I'll be able to take my camera (the sensor's buggered ) but I'm sure I can attend the exhibition and provide you with some (not so) artistic drawings

Is cumberland house totally empty at the moment? where is any opposision going to come from for the development.

If it is empty that would make things alot easier and quicker.

I feel sorry for the likes of Malcolm Payne architects and the other companies that are squashed between the BST site and this one. I'm sure work productivity is going to go through the floor.

Yeah Trident House is social housing, and from what I have heard, not a very nice place to live. That was a few years ago though so it could be better now.

I said 'vacate' because I think it is an alright building, and could benefit from a makeover and maybe being taken into private hands.

It is a pretty big site, and we could be looking at this, BST, the Bank Apartments and 11 BP all u/c at the same time

AFAIK Cumberland House is empty, or nearly. I just hope the other side of Broad St gets sorted soon too.

I have been on virtual earth recently too bio it's good isn't it. Suprising how much undeveloped land there is, it just a case of linking pieces together to form a large site like they did at Brindley Place.

I would expect so. I don't like it, but can see the potential in a reclad. However, is something funky of similar height or taller is proposed then I won't cry too much...

nah your right bio if the height is similar then so be it i think it has a good effect on the skyline. i think it just represents how england tried to build skyscraper offices similarly to the cis tower in manc

A reclad please!! I like it's monolithic quality. And keep Trident House too! Just build around it.

I love Cumberland House - it's so, so, so dated yet great at the same time. I've said it before but if it's empty, someone should switch those two lights off that light up a couple of the random offices at night!

Is it a similar design to the old Post and Mail building?

And just for the record, I think Trident House is a bit Bronx-like in style and colour.

Personally I hope they demolish CH - it look dated as a 60s throwback. I'd rather they start from Ground Zero and build something in keeping with the future aspirations of Broad Street ie V Building & BST.

And Trident House does seem to be a rather bad blot on the landscape -reminds me of a cross between Hagley Road No 1 on Five Ways and the Nat West building on Colmore Row, but with none of the charm from either.

Give it a reclad and/or hand it over to private hands
