This thread opened in 2007. For a 110m building, 10 years is a damn long time to wait.

According to Emporis, it's been U/C for over 50 years. It was started in 1963.

It is not the height which caused the delays, but:
- typically very long planning cycles in Germany
- legal fights between the client and the construction company
- problems with the delicate roof and the architecture for the concert hall (which is aimed to have one of the best accoustics in the world, so also a very delicate matter) which is inside the building.

I made a quick size comparison of famous opera houses:

- Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg
- Sydney Opera House
- Palau de les Arts Opera, Valencia
- Opéra Garnier, Paris
- Copenhagen Opera House

No, completely finished ("FERTiG") yesterday, incl. cranes, only the square before the building has been cleared today.
Official opening on Friday Nov. 4th, the Plaza between brick & glass opens next day, first music event in January.

It is really a masterpiece, and was worth the wait (and the money, I hope !).

On top of my list to see a concert. Wondering how hard it will be to get a ticket.

Opening concert is on the 11th and the 12th of January, however the tickets were given for free in a lottery.

All but a handful of concerts in the big or in the small concert hall taking place until end of February 2017 are sold out. Even most concerts in March are already sold out. I have stopped checking later dates.

I actually prefer northern Europe in the summer.

I have just checked for May 2017. Out of 38 concerts in the Elbphilharmonie, 15 are already sold out.
And for June 2017: A few are sold out, a few have plenty of tickets for sale, for many other concerts ticket sales start on 4th of January 2017.

This really turned out great, much better than I expected.

Love this curved glass

This must be where it transitions from the brick warehouse to the glass addition

Feels like Kubrick

I'd like to see some photos of inside the brick warehouse itself, and also more of the cranes against the building. Looking forward to finished landscaping.
