I know, you aussies you love water like Hamburg people do
The first pic from #151 we took from a pier not from a boat, btw, so watching the new EP from there will be a bit closer than in Sydney.

This is the most fascinating corner of Hamburg's port, and Hamburg is really a fantastic city just because of water everywhere and its more than 2500 bridges.

love

Oh man this has got to be on the most beautifull projects around the globe at the moment. I really like that old/new mix like you see in the Hearst magazine tower in NYC.

Hi Frank,

You as German you would say "jein" (or should I write "jain"?), but better don't ask me after too many details, please
I'm a tourist not a photographer, but my friend who shot these philharmonic hall pictures (I persuaded him to show, resp. chose them only) is shooting hundreds photos of the Hafencity for documentary purposes every week, indeed. The trouble is, he doesn't like the Hafencity very much, and I can feel pretty good why he doesn't want to give the photos away. Not only he, cause during my 3 visits to Hamburg, since June last year, we met other local people here, and nobody said he/she would like his/her "own" Hafencity.
Strange?
You know, Hamburg is such a fantastic city, and Hamburg's downtown is probably the most interesting and beautiful one in the World, including the old warehouse (Speicherstadt) and the kontorhaus (Chilehouse+) quarters of course, and the level here in Hamburg and Germany is very high already. But, in short, this and the new Hafencity - this is not the same level. Not nearly.
I don't know how detailed you know Hamburg, ever been here? If not, you may follow the red path unter (+)more->"hamburg for tourists" on the website I mentioned in #151 the next time you should go to Hamburg, or/and view the photos in the parts 2a,2b,3,4a,4b and compare them with real Hafencity photos (not computer graphics) you can find everywhere in other threads here or elsewhere. Sure, the new philharmony will be a great and fantastic Hamburg's new landmark, and EUROPEAN - don't get smoke in your eyes dear Aussie friends! Its surrounding water is amazing, maybe one or another building will be very nice too, but on the other hand, the entire area of Hamburg's new city extension is big, too big, hence the average quality will be not very high, rather low, comparing to the "old" Mo-Strasse/Alster/Jungfernstieg/Gaensemarkt/Potsstrasse/Colonnaden/Roedingsmarkt area.

In the downtown, at present, you can walk along the small Alster lake, channels and arcades, you can watch the water & swans, enter tens or even hundreds of shops, more than ten shop-passages, small and big restaurants, one after another, shop by shop, a really great feeling. Of course, the Hafencity isn't finished today, but the two already finished streets, I mean these two along the channel with the vintage boats at the pier, give me rather a sad than a good premonition, so my feelings about the future things here are more than mixed.
During a guided tour one month ago I made some notices, here only one example of it:
the shopping areas of Hamburg's downtown take a bit more than 320,000 sqm now, which is not really very much for a 2 million city, they said, and the new Hafencity should extend the current downtown by 33 per cent.
But if so, the Hafencity should need next 100,000 sqm for new shops, but there will be less than 45,000 sqm for shopping only.

Sorry for writing about the Hafencity here in your philharmonic hall thread, but I have to leave Hamburg for Canada tomorrow, hence very hurry at moment.

hoping you are not angry
love
Maja
